In DC Comic's "Batgirl" released April 10, character Alysia Yeoh comes out as transgender.

Wired reports that DC Comics is working to continue to expand the diversity of the superhero universe.

In "Batgirl #19," Yeoh comes out as a transwoman in a conversation with roommate Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl. Yeoh also identifies as bisexual.

Writer Gail Simone told Wired that she suggested the storyline to DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio over lunch one day and was prepared to make a passionate defense for the character. But, Simone said, DiDio quickly approved the idea and "went back to our excellent nachos."

Simone also told Wired that diversity is the top issue for superhero comics: "Look, we have a problem most media don’t have, which is that almost all the tent-poles we build our industry upon were created over a half century ago… at a time where the characters were almost without exception white, cis-gendered, straight, on and on. It’s fine — it’s great that people love those characters. But if we only build around them, then we look like an episode of 'The Andy Griffith Show' for all eternity.”

Yeoh is not the first transgender character in comics, but she is the first transgender character in a mainstream superhero comic.

Batgirl is the wheelchair one. The trans one is not.

And why would a transgendered person in a wheelchair be hilarious?

It's actually about as funny as a coalburner getting beaten by a black man for cheating.

Because its a special interest double whammy. They should make the character autistic as well.

Why do you have to view it as "special interest"? Why not just see it as the positive portrayal of a transgendered person it was intended to be?

because I had thought it was a transgendered person in a wheelchair. I'm fine with positive portrayals of trans peoples, especially if they arent overly sexualized.

Okay. That's a reasonable statement and I'm glad you feel that way.

What the fuck? Batgirl is now transgendered? I was not expecting this, I expected them to introduce a new character, but not an established character. Is this going to be the character's new continuity?

Is one of these characters a lesbian?

I remember seeing a Batman cartoon which portrayed Catwoman as a questionable lesbian.

No, her friend is transgendered. Did anybody actually look at the image?

@408,219 (kook !!32zdfdzi+)
No, you're thinking of Batwoman.
