Like, for instances, the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado where infamous killer James Holmes shot up a crowded theater during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. Has there perhaps been any person who was suicidal and decided to take a bullet for somebody then get perceived as a hero?

uh I'm pretty sure there was a guy who did that in the theater in aurora but i doubt his actions stemmed from suicidal tendencies
someone who is suicidal may be prone to take risks so I'm sure this kind of thing happens given the right situation

I don't think so; it's too unpredictable. The odds of being shot in a movie theater are probably well under 1 in 1 million (we know this because in the past year Americans have seen at least 100 million movies but there have been under 100 movie theater shooting deaths). So the odds of someone feeling suicidal, and a mass shooting happening simultaneously, plus being able to get in the right position at the right time to take a bullet is just insanely unlikely.
I think it's also improbable because suicide is an act of selfishness, and you'd have to be very altruistic to risk your life for someone else.

We should all be reassured by this, really. For every shooter out there, there are hopefully many people theater hopping, our unknown guardians, there in case the worst happens.
