It is genetic and cultural. In my family (both sides), alcohol makes us feel better and we are highly prone to alcoholism. How alcohol affects your mind is based on genetics. I am of Irish and German background, and alcohol is infused in the cultures and genetics.

There does seem to be a genetic component, but it isn't a prerequisite to becoming an alcoholic. You can become one without the genetic factor, and having the genetic factor does not gurantre you'll become an alcoholic.

I'm so tired of genetic predestination theories. Genes are locks. Sometimes other genes unlock them and sometimes environmental factors will unlock them. Gene expression is never guaranteed. In a world without alcohol, there would be no alcoholics irrespective of genetic diversity.
