To be fair, when transwomen are stopped by cops, they can be arrested for prostitution if they have condoms on them.

3. The Gender Binary
The gender binary exists for easy categorization and labeling purposes. For most people, it is something that is taken for granted. Females who identify as women use the women's restroom. Males who identify as men dress in suits and ties or tuxedos for formal events. It is the way it is, and that fits well for many people. But for trans people living in a culture where the gender binary rules all, it is a daily battle.

Anonymous F quadruple-posted this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #405,257

You would have to be insane to actually put credence in this pseudoscience. Male = man, Female = woman. A female wearing a tuxedo is just a woman in a suit: not a man. A male in a dress is just a man.

Anonymous G joined in and replied with this 13 years ago, 3 minutes later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #405,259

In other news, women are a 100% more likely to get womb cancer than men!

Anonymous F replied with this 13 years ago, 1 minute later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #405,260

4. Gender Expression
Out of the three terms -- "sex," "gender identity," and "gender expression" -- which do you think we notice most about people on a daily basis? If it were a person's sex, then we would have to see under that person's clothes or test his or her chromosomes (and even then we could get a conflicting report). If it were a person's gender identity, we would have to either ask that person how he or she identifies or somehow get inside the brain and find the answer for ourselves. By process of elimination, you guessed it: it's gender expression.

The writers must know they are being facetious. You don't have to see someone's penis to know they are a man. If you see a man, with secondary sexual characteristics, wearing a dress, that's how your mind interprets it. You don't see a dress and then think "that's a womenly gender expression, the wearer must be a female".

Anonymous F double-posted this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #405,261

5. Orientation And Gender
If we look at society as a diverse group of individuals where heterosexuality might be the most common sexual orientation but not necessarily normal, then we can more easily see that human sexual orientation varies: some people happen to be straight, some gay, some bisexual, and so on. This does not necessarily have anything to do with a person's gender identity or expression.

> heterosexuality is not normal
lol yeah it is. heterosexuality is the normative sexual orientation for humans

Anonymous F triple-posted this 13 years ago, 3 minutes later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #405,262

6. Coming Out To Oneself
Realization that one is trans can take anywhere from a few moments to several decades. Usually, trans people have an inkling early on in their lives that their assigned gender feels out of sync with their bodies. The self-realization process is extremely complicated. The human mind does its best to help us survive, which can translate into triggering intense denial. Because of societal constraints, it is common for a person to try to ignore signs pointing toward transgenderism, whether consciously or unconsciously.
> The human mind does its best to help us survive, which can translate into triggering intense denial.

because trans comes from outside the mind? trans is a condition of the soul? wtf

> Because of societal constraints, it is common for a person to try to ignore signs pointing toward transgenderism
are they pretending it is an objective condition, instead of a subjective one? "we did a test, you're trans. No i'm not! sorry, you're just ignoring the signs that you are trans"

Anonymous F quadruple-posted this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #405,263

7. Surgeries
Health insurance covers transgender surgeries in very few cases. Some people have fewer surgeries than they would like because of the high prices. Still other trans people elect not to have surgery at all because they simply do not want to.

For a long time, and still in many places today, people refer to some transgender surgery as "sex-change" surgery. Later on came the less-harsh sounding "sex-reassignment surgery." Today, more and more people are realizing that surgery for trans people is not a gender "reassignment" but rather an affirmation of the gender that a person has always been. Gender-affirming surgery seems to be the most accurate reflection of this.

> conflating sex and gender after spending several pages distinguishing them
wtf huffpost

if gender is a social construct, how can you always have been a gender?

9. Transgender Children
There can't really be transgender children, can there? Kids can't know for sure how they feel when they're really young, right?

Wrong. Gender identity is thought to be solidified by age 6. This does not mean that children absolutely, positively know how they identify by that age. It simply means that their gender identity is there. If it doesn't match up with the sex they were assigned at birth, then that will start to manifest itself in different ways.

> This does not mean that children know how they identify, It simply means that their gender identity is there.
wtf is this magical thinking? For gender to make sense as a concept, it has to be subjective.

> if a boy likes dolls you should cut his penis off

11. Transgenderism As A Mental Health Issue
Gender identity disorder (GID) appears in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), which is the American Psychiatric Association's official diagnostic book. GID, soon to be changed to gender dysphoria in the DSM 5, is classified as a mental health condition in which a person desires to be the "opposite" sex of that assigned to him or her at birth. Due to its criteria, many trans people fall under this diagnosis. It is still classified as a mental disorder by virtue of its existence in the DSM.

> the "opposite" sex of that assigned to him or her at birth
wtfffffffff the heavenly bureaucrat that assigns babies a gender? wtf does this mean. all these points use spiritual/emotional language in describing a supposedly objective scientific phenomenon

http://waltheyer.typepad.com/blog/2013/02/transsexuals-not-born-in-the-wrong-body-transsexuals-just-average-guys-with-psych-problems.html#comments

A study exposes the long running lies of the transgender advocates; proves transgenders are not "born in the wrong body"

A University of Rome study proves transsexuals have normal Y chromosomes.
The SRY is the main sex-determining gene. AZF a, b and C are genes for male infertility.

Transsexuals do not even have a smidgeon of abnormality there.

The DAX1 and androgen receptor genes were theorized to cause transsexualism since they can lead to intersex and can turn a person with a normal Y chromosome into a XY woman. Yet there is no alteration in these genes in any of the transsexuals.

The DNA of the transgender is normal. They've looked at various parts of the DNA and their conclusion: "This gender disorder does not seem to be associated with any molecular mutations of some of the main genes involved in sexual differentiation.

Maybe transsexuals are not females trapped in male bodies after all. Maybe they are just average guys with psych problems. Decades of research and they just have not found anything significant, and now not to find an alteration in any of the main genes for sex determination in any transsexuals.

So I'll just reply to this since it's the most interesting thing ITT, for me.

There is very strong evidence for the brain having an influence on gender behaviour. Before I bring in evidence, I'll just clarify that I'm not saying that gender behaviour is dictated entirely by biology, just that a biological influence exists.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexually_dimorphic_nucleus

Also, there was a study where the looked at the brains of transexuals and the brains of non-transexuals and they found that the brains of the transexuals (maybe the SDN specifically, don't remember) resembled those of their opposite gender rather than their own biological gender. Surely not all of them were exposed to some random enviromental influence that made them trans? If so, wouldn't there be more trans people?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23324476

Background. Data of the literature demonstrated controversial results of a correlation between transsexualism and genetic mutations Aim. To evaluate the hormone and gene profile of M-F transsexual. Subjects and Methods: Thirty male-female transsexuals aged 24-39. Seventeen had already undergone sex reassignment surgery, 13 were awaiting. All subjects had been undergoing oestrogen and antiandrogen therapy. We studied hormones of the hypothalamus-pituitary-testicular axis, thyroid and adrenal profile, GH basal and after GHRH stimulation, IGF-1. The gene study analysed SRY, AR, DAX1, SOX9, AZF region of the Y chromosome. Results: Pre-surgery subjects had elevated prolactin, reduced testosterone and gonadotropins. Postsurgery subjects showed reduced androgens, a marked increase in LH and FSH and normal prolactin. Cortisol and ACTH were similar to reference values in pre- and post-surgery patients. There was a marked increase in the baseline and post-stimulation GH values in 6 of the 13 presurgery patients, peaking at T15. IGF-1 was similar to reference values in both groups, but one post-surgery patient, whose level was below the normal range. There were no polymorphisms in the amplified gene region for SOX9 and a single nucleotide synonimous polymorphism for DAX1. No statistically significant differences were seen in the mean of CAG repeats between controls and transsexual subjects. SRY gene was present in all subjects. Qualitative analysis of the AZFa, AZFb and AZFc regions did not reveal any microdeletions in any subject. Conclusions: This gender disorder does not seem to be associated with any molecular mutations of some of the main genes involved in sexual differentiation.

Haha, oh wow, I actually found something quite scientific and relevant in my casual googling. Usually I don't have such luck when we have our debates about gender.

http://www.wpath.org/journal/www.iiav.nl/ezines/web/IJT/97-03/numbers/symposion/ijtc0106.htm

> Transsexuals have the strong feeling, often from childhood onwards, of having been born the wrong sex. The possible psychogenic or biological etiology of transsexuality has been the subject of debate for many years [1,2]. Here we show that the volume of the central subdivision of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTc), a brain area that is essential for sexual behaviour [3,4], is larger in men than in women. A female-sized BSTc was found in male-to-female transsexuals. The size of the BSTc was not influenced by sex hormones in adulthood and was independent of sexual orientation. Our study is the first to show a female brain structure in genetically male transsexuals and supports the hypothesis that gender identity develops as a result of an interaction between the developing brain and sex hormones [5,6].

I got my copy of G.H.5, my new 3-in-one-printer, and I found the sports bras at Wal-Mart; 3-packs for $10 a pack. In leiu of going into the fitting room, I asked the nearby female employee to measure my bust size; I'm a 43. So I got a 3-set of 42; I've been wearing one for try... It is sooo comfortable, and my manboobs do not bounce as easily; I jumped a few times to see. OMG, WOW! This material feel so, so, so good on my skin. It's like a Guitly Pleasure or something.

*sigh*

But I digress... and this bra feels sooo good.

Sorry I took a while to get back to you, had a very busy day.

Here's an article that cites a few relevant studies.

Are you serious with this crap? No one is hardwired to like trucks. WTF? A ball is completely gender neutral!

I dont know if I can discuss this with you anymore. The fact that you actually think that things like preferences for makeup and high heels is genetic, just completely ruins your credibility.

Hey, hey, I'm not saying that they're hardwired to like those toys specifically, but that they have innate characteristics that make them prefer certain characteristics in a toy or object. And I'm not saying it's a catch-all either, just that it's a norm in different genders. And in fairness, the parts I'm interested in, the monkey studies and the parts about hormones, do take part in early life. They could be changed, or not come into play at all, depending on the enviroment.

A ball is completely gender neutral, and monkeys would have no idea about what a cooking pot or toy car even is. The link to that study is broken. You keep giving examples that just don't stand up to scrutiny.

Do you know that in the wild, many male animals are the brightly colored ones? Also, men used to wear makeup, and dress very flamboyantly.

They wouldn't need to know exactly what the objects were, just their characteristics. I think that's what the researchers were looking at, not the toys themselves.

@previous (kook !!32zdfdzi+)
But colouring in animals doesn't necessarily mean the same thing it means to humans.

> Also, men used to wear makeup, and dress very flamboyantly.
Yes, I'm not disputing that, and that right there is an example of an enviromental influence.

Their characteristics? Explain what that mean please.

Because they have a doll listed as a female toy, and a stuffed koala listed as a gender neutral toy which makes no sense.
@previous (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx)
So make up use is caused by socialization, correct?

Like the truck, for example, is very different to the plush toy.

I suppose that does sound odd. Perhaps the texture or appearance was what set it apart?

I want to reply to your point about makeup, but for some reason I can't post it. Keeps saying something about not being able to find a page.

I'll try rewording it. Bear with me.

It could have some basis in biology. Buss, in his worldwide mate selection preferences study, found that women were more concerned with their appearance when it came to attracting a mate.

It took place over lots of different cultures and enviroments but still got quite consistent results. Therefore we can infer that there is an innate factor in play.

Would a monkey somehow be hardwired to like trucks? Seriously? What makes a book gender neutral, a cooking pot feminine, and a ball masculine?

Wait, so when many male animals are brightly colored to attract mates, make brightly colored nests to attract mates, and when human men used to dress very showy and use makeup, well we cant connect any of that to biology? But when women wear makeup, it definitely has a connection?

Not trucks and such specifically, but their characteristics. Like the doll's texture or being able to move the truck on its wheels, for example.

Again, some of their choices sound odd, but I'm assuming that they were basing those on some well-considered characteristics.

@previous (kook !!32zdfdzi+)

You said "used to", so that would imply an enviromental cause. With the Buss thing, an innate cause is very probable, because lots of different enviroments.

Why assume anything?

So because men used to wear makeup, it was socialization, but because women currently wear makeup, its biological?

Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx replied with this 13 years ago, 6 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #406,271

@previous (kook !!32zdfdzi+)
Because there's srong evidence for it. The wide variety of enviroments minimises an enviromental influence. The consistent results in spite of this suggest an innate factor.

No, I wasn't talking abbot makeup specifically. I offered up the mate preferences in genders study as a possible biological explanation for why women might gravitate towards makeup.

We have no way of knowing the researchers motivation in using certain objects.

So when men used to get women by being flashy, didn't that show a female biological preference for flashy men?

When we see male animals such as peacocks or lions who are much more vibrant than their female counterparts, does that show a female biological preference for flashy mates?

I'd like to assume that they were logical about it, what with them being scientists and all.

When you said this used to happen, in what county? I'm valuing the Buss study more than what you're referencing because it used lots of different countries, so its consistent results were less likely influenced by the enviroment.

In those animals, yes. No before you go saying that I'm being inconsistent, you're the one who made it very specifically about makeup and appearence. I've been using them in the context of how their gender results in differing behaviour. Just looking at makeup is a bit of a tunnel view of it.

kook !!32zdfdzi+ replied with this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #406,287

It happened, and still happens all over the world. Tribal males paint their faces, and etc even now.

Well if it isnt about makeup, name some of these other gender roles that might be innate.

Honestly, I don't think we're going to get anywhere here. I'll bring up a behaviour with a study or something saying it's innate, you'll say it's enviromental, we'll argue semantics for a little while before shifiting to something else. How about we just agree to disagree on the matter?
