It seems like $6000 would go rather far in Fargo. Decent apartments can be had for around $300-$400 a month, and that includes pretty much everything besides electricity. Jobs are plentiful and there seems to be a strong Microsoft presence there.

Currently 490 new jobs open and yes most require a degree but NOT ALL.
490 vs 8 n North Dakota.
I gamble a bit but really only on a sure thing like the last election - So seems to me North Dakota is one hell of a gamble IF you are looking at possible Tech future.
Fry cook in North Dakota but hey thats kinda a dead end job. Say have you considered teaching English in China. $10.47 per hour and no degree required n a simple to learn Certificate is all that is required and they even provide housing albeit you only get

If you've ever worked entry level IT, you'd consider it a part of the service industry. Since I assume wants to make a career out of IT, I suggest her start there instead of industry or any other labor intensive work (although he could use the workout). He's be better off with a roomate or two around the same age to save money and attend a CC in Fargo for his AA then transfer

You should consider the Boston area then. Tons of tech startups here and many great schools. There's plenty of ways to afford a college education here at little to no cost if you're willing to put some work in, even if you did poorly in high school. And plenty more opportunities to transfer to really great schools after some time at community college.
And $6000 is nearly a year's worth of food if you learn how to cook and shop carefully.
If you're serious about moving out, I'd gladly let you stay on my couch until you get your feet on the ground.
