Maybe I should consider becoming a pilot or air traffic controller instead. Not enough people in that job right now, and you get good benefits and retire early.

News by the way gets it so so fucking WRONG. Currently a mass of smaller towers are of course closing up shop, including one not far away from me - Damn happy they are not closing the small one minutes away from me.
But those ground based towers at Airports only handle take offs and landings. The serious shit of keeping them separated in air and lanes and altitudes and flight paths are a bunch of other controllers that never work at airports.
They all need to be replaced by mostly software anyway.

Takes a focus level and obsession for not making mistrakes. Imagine you b flying a machine with zillions of parts made by lowest bidder. Then the weather nor can pilots on own go for a change of anything to avoid without ATC giving ok. They do not even land the planes anymore.
Have been hands on a number of fighter jet simulators with all that motion and even in one case the full G force - have taken off with F-14 from Aircraft carrier (SIMULATORS ONLY)
HAVE Landed landed Crash crash flew over deck in2 ocean many tymes and never once landed without a full on crash.
Have flown for real in Recon versions of Fighter jets - was asked to take over controls and said NO NO NEVER - Flown in co pilot seat in single engine planes with friends who say Hey I am tired from skiing so how about taking over for me - no NO Me has never touched a flight control while in air.

I'd rather be the air traffic controller. I have no doubt that they need some young ones. They are closing many towers because there are many controllers retiring and they just can't get enough controllers.
