The internet promotes progress in cultures like these. Just look around. All those middle eastern countries got onto Facebook, and they started overthrowing their governments. China desperately tries to filter its internet so that people won't question their government. A girl in some middle eastern country was advocating equal education rights for females on a blog. Just to be clear, the sentence was not for having been the victim of rape, but having consensual sex with someone else. Not that that's much better.

Okay, the internet may have been an overly specific thing to focus on. But the general idea is that freedom of information and knowledge of more developed countries helps cultures like this to develop beyond their dogmas. The internet is simply the apex of giving regular people access to these things.
