she was old but doing fine when i left.

apparently a few months later she "wasn't doing well" but they never warned me or told me anything about that

Well, old cats have things that go wrong with their bodies. My last cat had (what we guess was) a stroke one night. He stopped working down most of his right side. He couldn't walk without flipping around on the floor. He couldn't take a piss without me holding him in the litterbox. He was just utterly confused about what was going on. In the end, we put him down. :(

Maybe there was a good reason behind it?

Most sorry to see the hurt. Reminds me of a super dog I lost as result of asking 4 divorce long ago. Never considered the dog in the equation and was never informed when one of my best friends died.
