Thanks. Well, I dont know if they should have been fired, but its very unprofessional for public representatives of a company to make sex jokes during a tech conference. Its reflects poorly on who they work for.

Apparently (from reddit comments) the 'dongle' joke was just quiet sniggering to each other when the word got mentioned and the discussion about forking ("I'd fork his repo" or something) was actually talking about forking in the technical sense, just the woman tweeting was too tech-illiterate to know what it meant and assumed it was sexual.

It could have been technical, and sexual. I'd have to see the joke for myself. But if it was heard by other people, it wasnt that quiet.

Have you seen the picture? Someone that close would have heard even a whisper.

It doesnt matter. If they knew that people were close enough to hear them, than they should have acted accordingly. What was said exactly?

Nobody knows. AFAICT they was having a quiet discussion about forking code with his friend and then when the person on stage started talking about dongles they made a throwaway one-liner about a "big" dongle, and/or just laughed a bit.

Also I disagree, I think it does matter. Especially in the tech community, which is full of this stuff. Everyone makes the dongle joke every time it gets brought up, without fail.

She didnt mention what they said exactly? That odd. I wonder if these men had already had some strikes against them.

I think there is some blog somewhere where she equates the joke to Lord of the Flies and herself to Joan of Arc. It's on Reddit but frankly this entire story leaves me with distaste so I don't want to read it all again.

I think this is it but although I can find the lord of the flies reference I can't find the promised joan of arc comment. Unless it's in the reader comment replies which I haven't read

http://butyoureagirl.com/14015/forking-and-dongle-jokes-dont-belong-at-tech-conferences/

It did link to a discussion on https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5399065 which i also found interesting

Anyway yeah there was like 10cm of legroom, it was a private conversation and she could have just shushed them and they would have stopped. No need to get staff involved without even trying to be reasonable and communicate that you don't appreciate what's happening first.
