Topic: You have an infinitely fast computer, what would you do with it?
Anonymous A started this discussion 13 years ago#26,381
Any program you run can take any number of cycles to complete, but will return the result instantly, though it must stop.
Some constraints would still apply under this:
* The halting problem
* Simply increments a variable and returning that variable on the next line would be stuck in an infinite loop, unable to return anything.
You can use any program available today, or specify your own.
As previously stated, you can't use it to get around logical paradoxes like Turing's halting problem, or becky's personality.

Well obviously I'd get rich. Hacking is a pain, so I'd generate bitcoins, which would get the blockchains faster than anyone else, so I'd be rich on bitcoins!
Yes, though a rainbow table search would be equivalent to a new brute force attack.

Since it's Pi Day, I would have it run Prime95 to calculate the value of pi. The real question is, if pi is an irrational number that goes on for infinity, but the computer is infinitely powerful, could it find the entire value of pi? If not, then why call it an infinitely powerful computer?

I would run Minecraft and create a working processor and memory from redstone circuits. Once that was running, I would work out some storage and build an emulator to run Dwarf Fortress inside my Minecraft model computer. I would then build a model processor and memory inside Dwarf Fortress to create another virtual computer to mimic the Apple II. Then I would build a model of a modern processor in Apple BASIC to build yet another virtual computer which would run DOS 3.1. I would then model the latest Intel processor operations with DOS batch files and build yet another virtual system. Once I installed OS X, I would install Windows 8 in a virtual machine. Then I would run a virtual machine in Windows 8 and install BeOS.After that, I would create a series of elaborate shell scripts to create another virtual machine. Then I would install gentoo. Then I would proceed to hack the planet.

I was going to give you a 3/10 for trying too hard, but ending with gentoo deserves a solid 8/10, bud. And that's the best I can do.

With a big enough neckbeard you probably could, but only if he had a question about Emacs that he needed you to explain in detail.
