Yeah, but it's faster to walk through LA than it is to drive through LA.

No, it's branding. The Audi A3 and the VW Golf are the same car underneath, but only a mora would pay over $10,000 more for the Audi unless it had a unique feature such as all-wheel-drive which could get you across anything.

I would be happy to pay the amount needed to import one to the USA, and then swap the non-DOT-compliant engine with an American TDI engine.

Gasoline engines run smoother though. I know Audi won Le Mons with diesel cars but seriously, diesel engines sound and feel like they belong in farm machinery.

Gasoline engines also run less efficiently with less torque, and until Koenigsegg's system takes off, it's going to stay that way.

Torque matters for towing but for such a small car, HP is the more important figure. Again, you'd be ruining a perfectly lovely small car with a tractor engine.

Torque matters in off-road situations as well. @previous (E)
The station where you fill the tank with gasoline or diesel fuel.

So the petrol A3 Quattro won't get you across anything‽

Nope, not with the fewer torques it won't. HP helps in straight lines, but torque helps in corners and getting you out of being stuck..
