For one you can't control the hallucinations produced by hallucinagenics. Also, having the hallucinations relies on you having access to a hallucinagen, and to acquire a hallucinagen costs money.

Yeah. I get annoyed by people who say 'just do weed' or 'take LSD'. I do know where to get them, I don't have the money for them, and I am predisposed to schizophrenia, so hallucinogenic drugs aren't a good idea.

A tulpa can reportedly become very autonomous. Many report their tulpa acting spontaneously and surprising them. Many other creators have reported having different opinions and personalities to their tulpa. One even said that he was an atheist, while his tulpa was religious.

There's a lot of people saying that they've developed one, and the guides to it are fairly consistent and elaborate. It seems like there's too much to it for it to be completely made up.
