normally I have a chat with my man, but today I had someone else and he just didn't give a fuck. barely even spoke to me, just gave me the papers to sign. it was over in a few minutes. I actually said "what, thats it?" lol
kind of annoys me since I have been putting in way more effort than even normal, which is itself more than other people do.
every 2 weeks I go to an office called jobcentre+ to prove that I've been seeking employment, and sign a paper to declare it and another one to receive my job seekers allowance, this is called signing on

Oh okay. In America, "signing on" would refer to signing on to the internet or to another computer network (back in the old days of dialup, one would "sign on" to AOL). So to me, seeing the phrase "sign on" associated with papers and talking to people just made me go lolwut.

"Log on" is also in common parlance regarding computer networks. "Sign on" is, I think, the older now less-used form.

I use three banks on line. B o A Chase and a local Credit union. All three and I just checked still use Sign In or Sign on.
Log on comes from way back at Ma Bell where on coming into the very old switch centers one actually signed a log book before taking a trouble ticket to work on. Term also was used by Morse code operators on western union. Log on with Handle. As a Ham operator I signed my log book when turning on a transmitter and of course I had a Handle. I was a rebel so no handle and just my first name.
Maybe log on goes even back to old sea ships with a paper log book.

"Sign off" could work in place of "sign on".
We do say stuff like, "I had to sign off on some papers," here, but I've never heard "sign on" mean anything but a computer function.
