12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.†And his disciples heard him say it.

What lesson is the Bible trying to teach here? Fig trees are evil for not producing figs out of season? All this does is make Jesus look stupid and petty.

@previous (Icarus !!fxtF/31b/) > jesus didn't "curse" anything, he performed a negative miracle > jesus din't destroy someone elses property, being the son of god all the universe belongs to him. > jesus didn't curse a fruitless tree out of spite, it was a metaphor for how the old jewish ways wouldn't come back into popular practice. He just needed to... Kill a tree out of spite... To prove a point to his followers who already believed him.
Idk, seems petty, jesus. Seems real petty.

It's a metaphor. The fig tree represents Judaism. It is beautiful and strong, and yet it bears no fruit.

By fruit, he means nothing you could benefit from spiritually. Jeesh, take a class in poetry.

It's just how the Bible tells it as if it was an actual event, like he really went up to a tree and berated it for not having fruit out of season. All I'm taking from this is that Jesus was a bit of a weirdo. A modern version might have him walking up to a ice cream stand and saying that they should go out of business and die because they didn't have his favourite flavour.

It is like that. Any time that someone reads something in the bible that sounds mean or crazy, they say that it never happened but was just a lesson for everyone.

Religion is much easier to defend when you just write the weirder stuff off as a "metaphor". If it was all taken completely literally, then this and stuff like it would just make Jesus sound crazy.

Most of it seems crazy, to be honest. So when people quote the bible as a source for scientific, fact or moral teachings, it just makes no sense.

@393,019 (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx) > Implying the whole of religion is anything more than a metaphor.
Protip: it's only the crazies who believe otherwise.

There are a lot of crazies, and they try and push legislation to teach their wackiness in public schools.
