Since the religion is one big yet great fabrication, just help them out by fabricating that you are one of them but on the greater path of going full on seminary student and need a couple of years to immerse yourself in your fellow humanity. Then when you are ready to be independent and on your own you can tell them the fucking truth. Tyming is everything.
I went through this myself except my parents are the Genesis of Jesus. A more pure but still fucked up religion based on less fabrication. Fabrication can be good because Christmas is a fun holiday for the non believers.

I was joking about the atheist thing (I hope). But yes, there have been cases of places trying to "cure" homosexuality with electroshock therapy. Don't think that it happens much these days if at all, though.

I can't think of a reason why you should have to tell them. Not like you're gay, atheism isn't exactly a lifestyle. Telling your parents would only cause them grief. I guess if you're wanting to tell them to get out of going to church that's one thing, but once you're on your own you can stop going without risking ruining your relationship with your folks.
