85mph should be standard on those long stretches of empty 2-lane road, not fucking 55. That's what it's like in Germany. And they fucking did it.

Meta !PARAdoxiHw joined in and replied with this 13 years ago, 6 minutes later[^] [v] #392,382

85mph is already the de facto speed limit on many Texas highways when traffic is clear. It's easy to hit 90 when traffic is clear. The fastest I've gone personally was just almost touching 100. They didn't raise the speed limit, they just legally recognized how fast everyone is going already.

It's basically like that in the upper midwest. I went 95 for over a hundred miles in my Golf last year and not one patrolman bothered me. The speed limit is 55 up there but that is just so ridiculous that no one cares and there is no penalty difference for doing 20 over or 40 over.

They also have some of the highest rates of teen pregnancy, infant mortality, and religiosity.

Other then burning up lots n lots o fuel.

One other reason its not such a good Idea to do 85MPH on such a road. Road kill can kill ya. I spent years n years going to Texas on Business. 4-5 trips a month from Los Angeles to Dallas - Rent a car and drive out towards Arkansas to what used to be a super secrete Air Force operation. Still there but in open. Greenville TX. Mass of spy aircraft - Look up Rivet Joint. So anyway many times animals would dash across that highway. Coyote hit at 85MPH could kill it and you at same tyme. In Australia this happens so often they have special added on grills. Of course the rumor goes (Some eat the road kill)

On the topic of fuel, that could bring revenue to the state via taxes.
And brush guards make it safe to speed.

@392,390 (Syntax)
That's not a major risk in areas like Dallas and Houston. Though when driving through the country at night once (going 45-ish mph through a town) I almost hit a stray horse that walked into the road. Slammed on the brakes and stopped maybe 15 feet short of hitting it.

Syntax replied with this 13 years ago, 10 minutes later, 30 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #392,402

@392,391 (HaikerensGuide !0VegJ9Jl.Q)
God ain't making forests and dinosaurs to end up as muck n oil. So 85MPH just brings the day closer to when your grandkids have no fuel.
Yea in Australia I sure saw so many cars in outback with grill guards. Still pisses me off that I hit a Parrot real hard.

@previous (Meta !PARAdoxiHw)
Once on that drive from Dallas to Greenville - radio gave a warning message for tornado with take precautions. I fucking had no clue what that meant. Road with 50 miles between anything and no one to ask and this was before cell phones and I understand there is no current coverage on that highway. Anyway no tornado. BUT BUT on return the next day and in the Air on American Airlines just as we got off the ground the pilot said- I am going to turn the plane a bit so all those on right side can see a tornado in distance and then he did the same for the other side of plane. When we landed I found out that Greenville, had been hit real hard.

You say that now, but when we get into alternative fuels, we'll be able to bring the speed limit well into the triple digits on certain 4-lane highways. I do love the smooth yet quick acceleration of an electric car. I want to see more of that.

I speed, run red lights, and generally just don't give a fuck when I drive. I got my car up to like 120mph just last week. 85mph speed limit is still the slow lane in my humble opinion. Oh yeah, and I drive when I'm high as balls, and I text, and I eat food, and sometimes I smoke. Idgafmf

Slightly exaggerated. I've driven high a few times, have inadvertently run a few reds trying to beat yellows, and I occasionally speed. I did go like 120mph last Saturday though. And I do text/call/eat/etc. While driving.

Once going 120 late at night on a 5 lane freeway. Blew a tire. I moved 5 full 4 full lanes over before I had that beast under control. Sobering because the lanes were clear.

How?! When I see yellow, I see it as a red light and I try to stop. If it's going right over me, I go. I have a perfect driving record. And why the fuck would you text while driving? I hope you run into a tree.
@previous (Syntax)
That's what a run-flat tire is for. And as these high-speed roads become the norm, the technology of durable tires will advance and so will the aerodynamics of a car.

Are you really too stupid to text while driving? And I fucking hate people who stop at yellows when I know both of us could have made it, and then I'm stuck at a red. Dammit.

Or too responsible. If you're looking at a cellphone screen, you aren't looking at the road.

In Texas, the speed limit is more like a suggestion, and the almost 140kph limit isn't much higher than Germany's 130kph suggestion.
@392,757 (E)
Texting while driving gets you the same fine underage drinking gets you here. And the yellow lights here are rather short to make the criminals that run this place more money.

my personal best was 135mph on interstate 35 on the way to austin. i passed an 18 wheeler and, because i was arrogant and thought i knew what i was doing, hit the air-wakes i didn't really consider and a large piece of window trim ripped off and the whole car, like, shook like the truck exploded. or that it blew a tire and the tire chunks hit me, but no. just hit that wall of air at 135mph. damn near lost control and got sucked under the truck because of the low pressure or whatever air pocket it makes. fucking shit rocked me.
so i got past him and let the engine slow me down sub 90 and then went ahead and got on down to 65 and exited.
took a little break.
