I fucking cried.

The holocaust itself is just a mass murder. Not really sad. Show me the individuals that died and then it is sad.

Too many to give all accounts of all their stories but you know they're there, and that's why it's sadder. It's your story times 1,000,000 (literally) and far more unjust.

The numbers alone do not bring sorrow. That's why I can cry to the stories told by holocaust survivors, but not to the figure of 6 million. Also, much of the sadness was brought by the shock of learning that she died before the movie even came out. She was a rising star that was shot down by her own father. She didn't even get the legacy of Heath Ledger. She just had an unmarked grave until her fan club paid for one.

Anonymous D replied with this 13 years ago, 2 hours later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #392,021

Honestly didn't make me cry. Shit like this happens all the time, like that wrestler who went nuts and killed his family then himself, or women who drown their children because of post-partem depression. In almost every case the action is justified in the parent's mind that they have to kill them to protect them. Obviously that's nuts, but there's a consistent pattern. Something snaps in the brain and this happens. Still sad, but this isn't any sadder than any of the other similar occurrences. There's more bawwwing because she's famous.

That sounds kind of selfish. 250-300 of these sorts of murders occur every year in the United States. I take that back. You're not selfish, and we can't directly control our emotions. It just sounds selfish to me because I have a different outlook.

I can understand how it's very easy to not be saddened by statistics because the story isn't there. If you just don't think about it, ignorance is bliss. But in my mind, I know that even though I don't know the story, I know the story is there. My mind forces me to fathom it and fill in the blanks and make up the stories and that's why I realize how sad things like the Holocaust are. It's sort of like how there are people who are amazed by the universe and people who don't give a shit about the universe, and it's always the people who ponder the universe and try to fathom it even though they know they can't and that makes it that much more amazing. It's the same way in my mind with tragedies. The more unfathomable the loss and sadness, the more sad it is, while people who don't bother even trying to fathom it find it sad.

Ever watched Holocaust movies like Schindler's List or the Pianist? Those are sad because they tell the stories. For me they're that much sadder because they force me to fathom just how sad all the deaths really are.

People die every day. If you gave me the numbers, I can't cry. But show me the decline of their life as they succumb to terminal cancer, or the effect of their sudden murder, and I could cry.

Anonymous D replied with this 13 years ago, 1 hour later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #392,077

The idea of people dying every second doesn't phase me because for many of them it's just there time. Death is sad but inevitable. It's unnecessary and untimely death, especially violent death that makes me sad.
