Topic: Is it weird for someone to love endings / conclusions?

Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 13 years ago #25,763

I have no why, but whenever I watch a series finale to a program. No matter how bad or good it maybe. I still enjoy it knowing that this is what the show will be closing on. Seeing stories come to a resolution is always exciting and there's a feeling as if one can appreciate it more now that it's over. Perhaps a feeling like fear has been taken away knowing that the show wouldn't suffer a similar fate to others in the past where it starts to get stale and boring.

It might be said that this is the whole point of watching, reading, listening or even taking part. Only with the conclusion do you have the complete story. This why our lives are incomplete.

Everybody loves and remembers a good conclusion. You might not remember the story, but you will remember the finale.

Good colculsions:

Lord of the Rings
Star Wars

Bad conclusions:

Mass Effect
Any T.V that gets cancelled halfway through.

Subjective. I think if addressed all the major problems, it explained all of the consequences of your choices better, and showed the effects of your actions on the galaxy.

The joker pickup and final goodbye to the love interest was also a really nice addition.

How were you two disappointed by it?

The DLC was lazy, any idiot could have done it. I wanted a proper ending where I could play out the consequences of my actions, not some fucking slideshow. The ending was ruined the minute they allowed the first ending to be released, they were never going to get my respect back after that. They fucked it up big time. We were promised a proper conclusion, a definitive ending to Sheperd's trilogy, that wasn't it.

If you can't admit the ending was rushed, lazy and totally fucking incompetent then I won't be able to convince you otherwise. If it was done right the first time there would be no need of the "Extended Cut".

Why would you expect the final ending where you got to play the endng yourself? It was a conclusion to it all, Shepard dies. It was never going to be playable.

Yes they screwed up horribly with the initial ending but the extended cut is allright. It tied everything up that the initial ending didn't explain. Crucially, it provided proper closure.

> If it was done right the first time there would be no need of the "Extended Cut".
But there was, and Bioware delivered. Despite their incompetence with the initial ending, they did right by the fans with the extended cut. They rearranged their DLC schedule to get it out quickly and made it free.

What, you wanted to go around as some random squad member? Really, I'm not understanding your desire for a playable ending. It wouldn't have worked, since the ending needed to show the effects of your actions all over the galaxy.

I heard mass effect's ending was like a choose your own adventure book, except that you only have one choice: save the universe cut scene 1, save the universe cut scene 2.

I'd like a game where your decisions affect actual gameplay and storyline to a point that it makes a difference. Like a playthrough with different decisions can yield an entirely different gaming experience, or path through the game. Have choives you make at the beginning have a drastic impact on the plot.
Idk, a coin flip choice as to which cut scene you want to watch at the end is not... Really a revolutionary way to end a game. When i heard initially that your choices effect the story, i thought cool, it'll be like a new game when i play through a second time.

Then i heard what those choices really get you. So i thought, meh, just another fps or whatever RPG clone.

With the extended cut, there's actually 4 choices and for three of them a lot of your major decisions will be taken into account in the final cutscene.

That is exactly my point the story was fucking all over the place (literally), they had so many loose ends by the end of the third game that the best option for them was to gather up as many characters as they could and have a big fucking fight on earth. The had a WHOLE GAME were they could have focused on closure of the many story arcs, instead it just opened up more.

That was what the fans were promised, our decisions would make a difference, they didn't do shit.

Cutscene 1: Red light
Cutscene 2: Green light
Cutscene 3: Blue light

What loose ends are you talking about? Extended cut installed, I didn't see any. You find out what happens to all of the major races and the galaxy is either rebuilding or a synthetic utopia. Not seeing any loose ends.

> Cutscene 1: Red light
> Cutscene 2: Green light

Have you actually played the extended cut? There's a whole cutscene at the end the end that shows you what happens with the various races and people, and it isn't just influenced by what colour you chose.

You obviously didn't play any of the DLC, pick up any of the optional characters and never did any of the side quests.

FTFY
Slideshow ≠ Cutscene

Haven't got any of the DLC yet, but I did do all side quests. Give a me a specific example of a loose end.

> slideshow
And? It provided closure and showed the consequences of your actions. It doesn't matter that it wasn't a full-on cutscene. Besides, given that they tried to get it out quickly and gave it away for free, I think that it's not unexpected.

- Any of the squadmates (aside from Legion, Thane and Mordin)
- Subplots with other NPC's (Parisini, Shiala etc.)
- Dark Energy (Not mentioned once)
- Harbinger (The entity that spoke directly to Shepard evey time you fought with the Collectors)
- Liara's father
- Aria
- The whole purpose of the Catalyst and Reapers contradicts the entire plot of ME1 and much of ME2

It's sad to see a great program take a willful dive, but it's the best option by far, because if it doesn't get abruptly canceled after a few seasons (read: nearly every decent show ever produced by a major network), it'll eventually devolve into some tired, dreary shitpile like South Park.

IIRC Bioware said that this was left deliberately open-ended in order to leave it to the fan's imaginations. I can see how this would bother people, but on the bright side this way they're easier to include in future games.

> Subplots with other NPC's (Parisini, Shiala etc.)
I don't think that they could go over every minor character in the game. The ending was about the big picture.

> Dark Energy (Not mentioned once)
Don't remember that being an issue.

> Harbinger (The entity that spoke directly to Shepard evey time you fought with the Collectors)
He's the Reaper that's shooting at you as you make your run to the Citadel. Obviously he shared the fate of the other Reapers, whatever that was.

> Liara's father
Meh, personally I'm not too bothered with this. Again, might have been left open so that it could be addressed in a future game.

> The whole purpose of the Catalyst and Reapers contradicts the entire plot of ME1 and much of ME2
How? The Catalyst's explanation of the Reapers fits in perfectly with what the Reapers were trying to do in 1 and 2. Wipe out all life. It's just that in 3, we find out why they're doing this.
