the bare hard drive is 2,5" generally, allthough you also have 1,8" disks that are (or where idk) used in ipods. If you arent going to travel with it you can also buy a 3,5" one which is a lot cheaper per gigabyte but often requires a power outlet. A cheap 1 tb 2,5" one costs about 70 - 100 euros here.
