Kinda getting tired of hearing this. Quite a few people don't get an MA. In fact, quite a few of my friends in college went to work after their BA, then later decided to go back and get thier MA. Also, i even had professors who didn't work on their phds until well after their 40s.
Matt not having an MA by 24 isn't unusual, actually most people don't have an MA, and if thise that do most didn't get it immediately after their BA.
Lots of people choose to work, then go back and do it later. That's all i'm saying. It is totally not out of the ordinary.
I've given some thought to an MFA program at SMU, it would be for fun. Not something i would be doing for work, but something i would be doing for myself. Why would you ridicule someone for attaining higher education? Why would you accuse him of taking too long and imply he is uncapable, when actually there is no "right time" to go to grad school? That is different for everyone.
So, making fun of matt for that is pretty insulting to those of us without and MA, but who would like to take time off from work to get one. It should also be insulting to anyone who isn't going to graduate on time. It should also be just insulting to anyone with an MA.

The last thing I expected was a quality reply to what I said. So if you know my history ...Having the ax to grind... So you're right on about people who may take a long time to complete what they started out to complete. I am not a good example because few had the opportunities I had. Future employer who recruited me and maybe even for all the wrong reasons (you would have to ask me for those details)
Bottom line - I was paid to go to UCLA and USC and some UCSD (two courses) Cal Tech and one amazing course at MIT (same professor I later had at UCSD)
It was my intention to blow off the Paper BSEE - Pressure from the company that paid my way forced me to take the Sheepskin - I had so little respect for it at the time. I have 25-30 more units then necessary for the MSEE and this time that is one Sheepskin I am not about to pin on my wall.
Nothing from wayyyyyy back then to now has changed as I see it. People go to school with no idea what they really want to do after graduation. After multiple tests a consular suggests this or that for a major, and many go with it. Others show some excitement in a subject like Art or something of that nature. This can be very satisfying.

Its a shame for so many to spend so much time and money in school without a clear understanding of goals for their future.

Hey more power to you if you have the time and can afford that. Doing anything for yourself is always a great thing. I ridicule those who play the system as Matt has played it. Living on student loans and playing out the time as much as possible. Finding a way to con the system so that the loans are not repaid.
That is exactly what Matt did. Back when he first took out loans he knew many were getting away without repaying them. 60+ year history behind that. He got caught up with the Gov changing the system so loans were now a monkey on students back after graduation. However he knew that after his BA.
I am super busy with my NewBorn Satellites (and blowing tyme during Mardi Gras) so in serious butthurt make up time because client is on my back and the insurance company that covers the billions, is on my case 24/7 at the moment. You can look up Matts Dox and locate the obscure thesis Matt wrote for his MA. He decided to jack off the system and poke fun at his MA.
His PhD committee was not amused. That in itself was not the reason his PhD candidacy was rejected, with no possibility of a future re look. The committee found reams of evidence of plagiarism on net published works by Matt. (and topics they found beyond repugnant [pedophilia & scat])
So I have fun making fun.
If one embarks on the road to become XYZ, one should at least ask oneself -
IF I spend 2-5-10-15 years for the MA, is there a career out there that mates with my education? Last night on Charley Rose, the CEO of Sequoia Capitol was interviewed (funded Apple - Youtube (pre Google buying) Google - Oracle - Linkden - Paypal - Tumblr - Yahoo -) CEO was a Oxford educated "Journalist", truly a unique road to running a multiple billion dollar venture capitol company.
IF ONE decides as Matt did on a major that is only useful if you end up with the full PhD, to become a Professor, because for him the 21 years in school and about $125,000 in loans that must be paid back - Well its not for me to draw conclusions (sure I do)

"So You Want to Go to Grad School?" A bad idea unless they have no need to earn a living for themselves or anyone else, they are rich or connected (or partnered with someone who is), or they are earning a credential for a job they already hold. Liberal Arts/Humanities/Languages/etc - of course not true for Math Science Engineering Business.(Edited 4 minutes later.)
