It would be interesting to see them iron out that part of the canon, as the Eugenics Wars and World War III supposedly happened in the mid-1990s in the Star Trek timeline. While it would be interesting for the story to link up with the Star Trek universe, I think it would moving in the wrong direction as an extension of the Star Trek franchise. Roddenberry's ideas for Trek were centered around what human society did to better itself and overcome social problems rather than just war stories with a sci-fi backdrop.
I'd like to maybe see something more exploration-oriented set around Starfleet picking up the pieces after the Dominion War.

Would a World War III series even use the name Star Trek or would they just call it "World War III"?
Like how Smallville is about Superman, but isn't titled, "Superman: Smallville".
