I'm trying to repair the sound on a friend's laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1501. But that's not why I'm posting.
The laptop, although connected to my wireless network, won't actually load any pages on IE/Firefox (only browsers I've been able to test).
All other devices on the network are working just fine, including the computer I'm posting this from.
I've tried all the obvious stuff like turning the router on and off, updating drivers, restarting the laptop etc etc.
Also, I've checked for proxys in LAN settings.
Not sure what information is needed to solve a problem like this, but tell me and I'll post it.

I'm thinking the laptop's wifi card is either broken or not properly configured. What OS are you running?

Vista. The weird thing is, as soon as I turn the laptop on, it loads pages for about 15 seconds after opening a browser (either one). After that, no pages will load at all.

Now, google searches and the google website will load, along with facebook, but no other pages.

try setting your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 under the IPv4 settings of your network adapter.

open a command prompt and type 'ipconfig /flushdns' see if that fixes it.

Still no luck. If I ping any website, they all return four packets etc, but I just can't load them in a browser.

Ah. If it works at all then it's likely not a hardware problem in which case I have no idea :(
Have you done virus scans? Also check msconfig (run it from the start menu) and try disabling programs loaded at startup. If it works for a few seconds after the laptop is turned on then stops it could be some program loaded at startup.

I recently factory restored the laptop, so haven't done a virus scan since that was only yesterday. I'll do one now anyway.
Didn't think of it being a startup program, foolishly. Not sure if it will be that though, since I can still load facebook and google now. I'm so unbelievebly confused with this.

The hosts file is in Windows\System32\drivers\etc and all lines should begin with a # unless your friend has made any changes. Some malware (such as DNSChanger that was a big deal last summer) will edit this file to redirect Internet activity. Even if it isn't malware that is doing this, it is probably good to check that the hosts file isn't one of the causes. (as even well-meaning edits of this file can fuck things up)

Maybe. Maybe not. If you are having problems with your Internet connection that sound like DNS issues, it is probably worth at least checking that nothing is wrong with your hosts file. If you see a bunch of weird entries, then something is amiss. If not, check this off the list of possible issues and move on to checking other issues.

Ugh, fixing Dells is always a headache. Probably grabbing the any updated drivers for Vista off dell.com and then relying on liberal use of Internet search engines to sort out any additional headaches is a good start.
