Solution: ban low-caliber assault rifles...?

Anonymous B joined in and replied with this 13 years ago, 1 minute later[^] [v] #385,564

Why do we need assault rifles at all? They arent used for hunting deer, you know.

We don't need them, and they really do suck for hunting, but they are not the main issue. They suck and they are popular because they look scary.

They are an issue. They are created, or used for the murder of humans and nothing else.

@previous (B)
But they fucking suck at performing that task. Pistols, on the other hand, are also used for the murder of humans and nothing else. That's what the school shooter used, two pistols. He left the AR-15 in the car because it sucked. And they jam with high-capacity magazines.

With a pistol.

Strange... It's almost as if all of these guns are causing lots of gun crime...

Pistols, to be specific.

There isn't really a public willingness to ban handguns for personal use though. Personally I think that's the way to go. Handguns are involved in most gun-related crime (something like 80% I believe) so making it harder to get the guns that are responsible for a minority of gun crime ("Assault Weapons")is going to be of limited effectiveness at best.

I know, it's just silly to want to ban a type of rifle just because it looks scary. They shoot 22-caliber rounds, FFS.

The thing is that semi-automatic assault rifles are like Japanese katanas in that they look cool but are basically useless. Pistols are like switchblades.

Or .556 or .308. You can get an assauly rifle chambered in many different calibers.
Also, they do not suck at performing their job. They kill people with much efficiency. They aren't great for hunting necessarily because theur range isn't as great as, say, a single shot bolt action hunting rifle that's a foot longer in the barrel.

But if you need to kill a person at medium to close range, an assault rife will beat a pistol every time.

An AR-15 takes a 223 caliber round. It's very high velocity, but still low caliber.

Completely and utterly pointless. A semi-auto M1 Garand would do the trick just as well. And it'd have a bayonet.

squeegee replied with this 13 years ago, 29 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #385,638

@previous (A)
So would a semi-automatic remington .308. But with a holographic sight and pistol grips that m1 garand wouldn't do you much good. I could sight you and get off ten rounds before you could even get an m1 garand to your shoulder.

Any source that he used a pistol to blow a hole in the school?

That's the Democrat mentality though. Remember when Clinton banned bayonets on "assault weapons" even though no one has seriously used a bayonet in combat since like 1812?

@385,645 (B)
It's quite implied, since he left the AR-15 in the car. I could be assuming, but I don't think he shot a hole in the school door, ran back to the car, left the AR-15 in it, and then ran back with his pistols. It makes more sense for him to have used the pistols to open the door.

The V-Tech shooter killed 32 students and injured 23 with just two pistols.
The Columbine shooters killed 15 students and injured 21 students with two pistols, two shotguns (one of which was illegal due to being a sawn-off shotgun) and various explosives.
The Sandy Hook shooter killed 20 students and 6 adult staff members, and injured 2 others, with a 10mm Glock handgun and a 9mm SIG Sauer P226. He shot a door with a Bushmaster rifle.
It's all the Bushmaster's fault!

Actually Eric Harris was equipped with a 9mm Hi-Point carbine for the Columbine shootings. So not really a rifle, in my opinion cause it's using a handgun cartridge but definitely not a pistol. It only had a 10 round magazine though so it's not dangerous.

Hmm... You're right. But, the pistol seems to be the main killer in these tragedies, and not the assault rifles everyone keeps freaking out about.

Assault rifles look scary but they have limited utility off the battlefield. Not good for hunting, and they cant be concealed so that's a major downside for criminal usage. Also they're way too expensive for "gangstas". The main buyers are tryhard Rambo-wannabes.

exactly, just like people who buy performance sports cars for off the racetrack use. the main buyers are tryhard Dale Earnhardt-wannabes.

you say that now, but when the zombie, or alien, or foreign military invasion begins, you'll change your tune.
whatever the apocalypse, an ar-15 carbine will suit all your urban survival needs.

MFW it's illegal to own an assault rifle in the US already, and always has been.

Actually, squeegee has a point... When the zombie apocalypse happens the Americans with all their guns will be very useful.
