Friend of mine who studied American history at uni once told me that prior to the Civil War, the Constitution allowed for the secession of any state without the approval of the Union as a whole. He considers Abraham Lincoln the worst president in American history, declaring a war that was arguably unnecessary and (at the time) totally unconstitutional.
