Topic: Trying to get more attention on the internet. (Possibly the most self indulgent post on Minichan)
Postmortem !!Qe8ScDbX+ started this discussion 13 years ago#24,768
Okay, so for reasons beyond the fact that I'm a complete and utter attention whore, I'd like to start getting so more attention on the internet. The main reason for this is money. I don't have wild dreams of becoming the next RayWilliamJohnson and making a six figure income off the internet. However it would be nice to have enough money to pay for extra expenses in my life while I'm in college without having to get a "real job."
My current plan of action is vlogging, I figure I should start out with the most minimal of investments. I'm working completely off of free websites, and am using products that I already have to generate my content. Right now the investment is $0.00. I also plan to only use money I make from the internet in order to invest in things related to make money from it. For example if I make $1,000.00 next month, but only $200.00 of that came from the internet then only the $200.00 could possibly be used for investments related to the internet. So theoretically money from Youtube Views could pay for a ".com" website, that could pay for yet another ".com" site, and so on and so forth. Again my goals are pretty small, if I make $1,000.00 a month I'll be ecstatic. Heck, if I make $100.00 a month I'll be pretty happy.
The downside to all of this is that I'm terrible at promotion. The first Youtube video I ever made got like 30,000 views and I've never been anywhere near that mark since. In fact as life continues the average amount of attention anything I put online gets has decreased. Where at one point I'd make videos and maybe get a couple hundred views on average, I now am surprised if my video even gets 100. Granted this is due largely to my increasingly smaller social network. I don't have a Facebook anymore, so all of the friend views are gone, I don't have a Vampirefreaks anymore, so all of those views are gone as well. (I used to be semi-well known on that site, but that was due to massive amounts of spamming "Hey, let's be friends" comments to new users.) Doing that literally took full 8 hour days of work over the course of about a month. But even that would only get me maybe a couple hundred extra views on Youtube and that is most certainly not worth the effort.
So something needs to change, how the fuck am I going to get some attention? Okay, first of all let's rule out some ways that I'm not going to get attention, I'll make a list, here it goes, it follows after the colon that is right here:
1.Spam.
Oh I could go on every board of 4chan and post my video, and do it every day, and generate a fair amount of views. I could post my video on every subreddit and get some views that way, too. I could comment on tons of other Youtube videos telling people to "Go watch my video", but I'm not going to do any of that. Why? Because it generates negative feedback. I want a consistent audience that likes me, not a bunch of people who clicked on my video because it happened to be in front of their face and then either have no interest in me or more likely see me as a spammer and dislike me and evade me in the future.
I don't see spam as the same as marketing, however. Marketing is fine. If I make a politically charged video, and I post it on a bunch of political sites then I see no problem with that for example. Also places where I'm already active I really have no issue posting videos on. (Minichan for example.) I will say that I would rather start a discussion using content I create rather than simply advertising myself. I try to do that the best I can.
2. Pay-For-Views/Pay-For-Promotion: First of all this would go against my initial plan of not spending any money that I don't make from the internet. At this point that would have to be an outside investment, and I'm not doing that. Furthermore I'm looking for money ultimately, and not just attention. Views that cost money, cost money, and would take away from whatever revenue my content would bring in. At a certain point I might consider experimenting with paying to promote one video and then attaching another video onto that video and not paying for the latter video and seeing how much revenue that generates. But that's not until I not only have enough money to have made any money, but also enough money to be doing risky investments.
Okay, so how am I going to get views? I mostly have no idea. I've tried being active on a couple different sites to generate a bit more traffic. But that's not really bringing in the big views, the ones needed to actually make some cash. I do however have some ideas based on what I've observed from Youtube Users that get large amounts of views/attention and a basic knowledge of marketing strategy.
My first concern is quality. I need people to enjoy my content. Now film quality is something that's not really going to happen at this point. That's something I would only work on after I've already made money. So I need to be able to make quality videos with the materials I have at my disposable. Mainly a phone. My computer freezes up like crazy if I even try to use Windows Movie Maker so a phone is what I'm going to be using. So I need to be interesting/entertaining with relatively low film quality, no editing capability, and no real talent. No, unfortunately I can't do something really bizarre or amazing to attract viewers. I'm also unwilling to seriously endanger myself so any views I might get from that are also views I'm not going to be receiving. So basically people need to be interested in what I have to say, which means I have to say interesting things, and entertaining things, oh what a challenge! But once I get that done with I can move onto some of the more subtle nuances of getting views. Surprise! Here comes another list:
1. Rhythmic Speaking.
A lot of the big names on Youtube and even a lot of the not so big names have a certain way of speaking. Beyond just being easily understandable, having good diction, and everything else commonly associated with good speaking their speaking tends to have a rhythmic and almost hypnotic quality. I know some users are very careful to do this, for example the user "Vsauce" clearly speaks in rhythm and even stresses odd words in order to achieve a particularly song-like quality.
2. Music
Having a song in the background seems to not only get views, but also keep viewers in for longer periods of time. (Just like the rhythmic speaking mentioned earlier.) Now not any song will do, I can't just play a bit of Fad Gadget in the background and expect the views to start rolling in. The songs that I think work best are ones that don't have any lyrics, are relatively simplistic, and repetitive although not repetitive to the point of being nauseating and head ache inducing.
3. Moving around a lot.
There are 2 different factors that I see with highly viewed vlog videos: Jump cut editing, and walking/moving around. I think it has to do with the changes making you refocus yourself and watch more of the video. I don't know though. All I know is that I should move around more.
4. Being concise.
Okay there is the odd youtuber or two that makes plus 10 minute videos and still generates massive amounts of views. This is pretty rare though. The only people who can really make super long videos and get attention are people with amazing talents, new information, celebrities, and people who already have a following of some kind. I fall into absolutely none of these categories, so my videos will be 5 minutes and under. The idea behind all of the things I mentioned above is that they refocus the viewer and bring attention back to the video preventing the watcher from going "This is boring.", and exiting the video. Those methods become less and less powerful as time goes on. If I can get someone to sit still for 5 minutes and they aren't a personal friend of mine then I am successful.
5. Finding a niche.
Okay, so I'm not a celebrity, I don't have a large following, I'm not a professional of any kind, so I'm not going to be on the front page of Youtube. It just isn't going to happen, not any time soon. If I make content that appeals to the mainstream my content is going to be buried under the thousands of people trying to do that. I've tried just making a video about something from Twitter's trending topics or commenting on a video that's gone viral, and it doesn't work.
My best bet is to find a place where I'll be able to generate a fair amount of views (say a few thousand), and work on getting to the top of that crowd. Basically I'd rather be a big fish in a little pond than a little fish in a big pond. I'm a fairly big fish in this pond, but this pond is more like a puddle and I need to be at least neck deep before I'm going to be able to swim around in my pool of money.
6. Good Titles
I need to have titles that aren't misleading titles, because those just make people dislike me, and kind of fall under the "spam" category in my opinion. But titles that are the result of plenty of searches, and make people want to watch my video.
7. Good Descriptions
See the description for "Titles", except in all instances of the word "title" replace that word with "description".
8. Good Tags
This seems very important when it comes to getting views, putting me on the right related video track is assuredly very important when it comes to generating an audience.
9. Responding to the right people.
Video responses are key, if I can get the attention of someone with more viewers than I have, I can essentially get some of their users if I respond to them and they respond back. Users that have large enough audiences to matter to me, but small enough audiences that they'll likely see my video if I send it to them are ideal. Also users with a penchant for responding to people are also ideal.
Okay, that's about all I can think of. I kind of focused on youtube the most because that's the main source of possible money at the moment. I have a Tumblr, but I'd have to pay for my Tumblr to not have the ".tumblr." in it to be able to hook up AdSense to it. I might put a Paypal donation link on there, but really that isn't going to do me much good until I generate a significant audience.
I'll try post the "perfect video" some time today using every technique I mentioned and seeing if it actually gets me somewhere. My prediction is that it will gain me like 10 extra views.
If you have any ideas, let me know. Oh, and wish me luck!!!

Full disclosure: I would never read something this long online unless it was from a very interesting or entertaining source. I'm fully expectant of any and all "Tl;Dr"s.
I also would like to think this might be the longest post on minichan that is written expressly for minichan and isn't a bunch of repetition/spam. Can anyone disprove or verify this?

How to become famous on the internet:
1. Post lots and lots of tired shit forced memes.
2. Rack up IRL debts to internet friends.
3. Steal photos and use them on your website.
4. ?????
5. FAME

I can write, and such, although that could always use practice. I'll be using my phone as a camera so there's pretty limited camera knowledge required when it comes to that. I of course need plenty of work, but at this point I think I have the ability to get a few hundred extra views.
@381,128 (D)
That requires knowing how to get attention and then also getting people to give me money. I need to get step 1 down before I can move on to step 2.

Not attractive enough, not down on my luck enough, would be a betrayal of my girlfriend's trust and absolutely against her policies. And even if I just said "fuck it, I'm sticking things up my butt for an audience" it would probably come back to bite me in the ass further down the line.

such as fail to tip waitstaff, make excuses for your shortcomings and attempt to justify your narcissistic tendencies towards individuals around you. yeah, okay. the reason you'll never become another ted bundy or paul bernardo is because you're a faggot with zero follow through. your life exists around preying on those weak (see immature) enough to tolerate your bullshit, which equates to fragile underaged females. it's obvious considering how much you whine about employers not accepting you because you can't successfully finish a job interview because to any other normal person, you're a shady scumbag.

Whoa there, first of all I won't become another Ted Bundy because I don't have a desire to murder people. I don't blame anyone, but myself for my shortcomings, and not having the money to tip waitstaff is hardly indicative of sociopathy. I strongly doubt I come off as a "shady scumbag" to employers although I don't know the actual reason I'm failing so hard at getting a job. References maybe?
I don't have a lot of follow through. I'm trying to work on that.

You're walking down a crowded path, man. Find a niche and run with it. For example there's this guy on YouTube that makes recipes absolutely horribly, like he makes a huge fucking mess and throws all kinds of shit in there. The dude clearly goes out and buys shit just to make an inedible mess all over his house, but hey, it's his little niche.

you have admitted before that you are a self indulgent narcissist. at no point in your post did you try to defend the fact that you prey on weaker individuals (such as your teenaged girlfriend) for your own needs. i don't need to scour this board to find previous posts of yours that own up to this fact. gathering the general opinions from other posters on this boardd, you're identified as a try-hard (and even within your own OP) an attentionwhore who needs some kind of validation from others. your limits on such are limited, but still capable. i find it hard to believe you won't turn to other methods to achieive this narcissistic pathology you already self-describe. saying you could be capable of similar crimes as ted bundy or paul bernardo isn't really my point; you are very obviously incapable of murder or serious crime (i seriously hope) but all of the workings of someone who manipulates others in order to be recognized are there. you remind me frequently of luka magnotta in his early stages, but i don't think you could even be that bad. at worst, you probably visit all the BBS boards googling your name and try to interject your name into whatever discussion you can.

I'm a bit self indulgent, sure. I've even jokingly referred to myself as narcissistic, but that's clearly meant to be facetious.
Being a bit egocentric and being a narcissistic sociopath (even a low level one, which I think you think I am.) are two different things.

Being quick to judge would mean that I haven't read your posts about your exploits for nearly a year or so. I think you are a person that is highly artificial, articiulate, manipulative and egocentric. If you are not actually narcissistic, then despite your ability to present yourself well, there is a moral vacuity and absence of empathy for the people you (probably don't believe) that you hurt, which suggests a tendency towards further sociopathic behavior until it really does something so egregious you probably won't discuss it here.

No, I don't know what you would think that. Your previous posting history indiciates that you feel like the victim for situations you were obviously the instigator of, you manipulate the feelings/thoughts/emotions of those near you and dismiss your wrong-doings as a situation of circumstance rather than admit any responsibility. The way that you act is to benefit you or draw attraction to yourself. You skirt any wrong doings on your own part because you believe that you have little culpability. That's fucked up.

You clearly don't consider others and have no problem verbally attacking someone. In fact you posting anonymously is probably to cover your ass. I'll bet things you've said/done are far worse and egocentric than anything I've ever even thought of.
