Europe is comprised of many countries all with individual governments. The closest thing there is to a europe-wide "nanny state" is the EU and EEC.

I don't think Europe's really that bad. Eastern Europe is still kinda shitty but Western Europe (France, Germany, the U.K., etc) seems like a pretty nice place to live. High income countries with a generous welfare state. 35 hour workweeks, free healthcare and 4 week vacations. What's not to like?

we also cook our own food.
and actually if you stick to the meat/fish department and produce it's all very fresh and healthy.
but if it comes in a box or a can from the aisles it's some kind of chemically laced cocktail of preservatives and high fructose corn syrup.
the frozen foods section is very inciting. there are these little pizza things that are like a ravioli with cheese and pizza sauce and little bits of pepperoni that are all sealed up inside and you cook them in the oven and eat them in one bit, so you make a few of them.
those are awesome.
all the breads are questionable unless it is baked in the bakery. that is the safe bread, but it also goes stale faster.
