It had been a long time (5 or 6 months at least) since I watched TV so this afternoon I figured I'd try it out and it's just nothing but garbage and advertisements. Its loud, obnoxious, badly written (especially the godawful scripted "reality" shows) and every five minutes it's another commercial break. I managed to make it through a dreadful episode of South Park and about five minutes of the news on CNN before giving up and turning it off. Even torrenting TV shows and watching them commercial-free feels like an utter waste of time.
Has anyone else experienced this where you used to enjoy TV a lot as a child/teenager but as you become an adult, you can't stand it anymore?

I still like lots of TV shows, but yeah I hardly ever watch them on actual television these days. Adverts are annoying.

Are American channels particularly bad for ad breaks? Over channels usually just have regular 15 minute breaks.

I think it's cause the BBC is funded by television licence fees so they don't have to sell as much advertising. We have publicly funded channels here which are essentially commercial-free but they show only really really boring stuff.

Not strictly true. The BBC tend to run adverts about their own forthcoming programmes which is mostly necessary and a misuse of the Licence Fund.

I think you just get older, have more responsibilities plus you're able to do all the stuff you couldn't do when you were younger (Go to the pub, drive, etc) so you have less free time.

I miss the news, and the channels that played documentaries, but those aren't worth what I was paying for satellite.

I know what you mean op. When i was a kid, i used to watch tv for hours a day. Perhaps it was because the content was a lot better than it is today. There were more interesting shows, and im not just talking about better cartoons, i mean better every other type of show as well. Also, the Discovery Channel, History Channel, and Space were such a blast to watch. Now they are garbage.
Nowadays, it is hard to find something interesting to watch on tv anymore, which is a shame. Even the good shows that i download, i have trouble motivating myself to watch them. And i can't watch "okay" shows, or "decent" shows anymore, they don't keep my attention. Only the very best shows that are able to keep me watching. Currently trying to work my way through Homeland Season 1. it's good stuff.
I guess 4chan has ruined my attention span... or rather, my "entertainment span" as i like to call it.

I miss those. As a kid I would watch Discovery and TLC and learn things. Now they're all full of "reality" shows. What the fuck is a show like "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" doing on The Learning Channel? Learn about trailer trash? No thanks. That shit belongs on the Jerry Springer show. @previous (M)
I wouldn't mind network decay if it went the other way as well (shitty networks turning good) but it never does.
