How important is daily sun? Because I do get out of the house but it's always foggy.
And what about people who work nights (and thus sleep during the day)?

Its pretty important. Lack of sun not only robs you of vitamin D, but can cause bad moods and depression.
People who work nights get much less sleep than people on other shifts and this is why. I would try getting sun on your days off, and getting an indoor sunlamp/bulb.
