Wrong.

The majority of updates inside service packs have never been automatically rolled out via Windows Update. They are available as separate download though.

So SP1 has a lot of fixes that may do nothing for you, or help you fix that weird issue you had in combination with something else.

Upgrading from Windows 95 (4.0) to Windows 98 (4.10) to Windows 2000 (5.0) to Windows XP (5.1) to Windows Vista (6.0) to Windows 7 (6.1) would cost more than simultaneous upgrades of Mac OS during the same time period.

Hell; installing Windows 7 would cost nearly half a grand!
