Not at all true. If? you mean a solution that satisfies you? Fact is there is a solution and of the type, I see multiple times a day with math. The key is to know what to do with the solutions and what to discard.

No, there is no real number that you can assign to the variable X which will make the statement true.

Both the numbers 4 and 5 are very real numbers that no one can deny. Denial is not a river in Egypt

You want to quibble over the = sign. Lewis Carroll had so much to say to you about this...So hard to pick just one to communicate what you fail to see.

''' "And you do Addition?' the White Queen asked. `What's one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one?'

`I don't know,' said Alice. `I lost count.'

`She can't do Addition,' the Red Queen interrupted. `Can you do Subtraction? Take nine from eight.'

`Nine from eight I can't, you know,' Alice replied very readily: `but - '

`She can't do Subtraction,' said the White Queen. `Can you do Division? Divide a loaf by a knife -- what's the answer to that?'

`I suppose -- ' Alice was beginning, but the Red Queen answered for her. `Bread-and-butter, of course. Try another Subtraction sum. Take a bone from a dog: what remains?'

Alice considered. `The bone wouldn't remain, of course, if I took it - and the dog wouldn't remain; it would come to bite me - and I'm sure I shouldn't remain!'

`Then you think nothing would remain?' said the Red Queen.

`I think that's the answer.'

`Wrong, as usual,' said the Red Queen: `the dog's temper would remain.'

`But I don't see how - '

`Why, look here!' the Red Queen cried. `The dog would lose its temper, wouldn't it?'

`Perhaps it would,' Alice replied cautiously.

`Then if the dog went away, its temper would remain!' the Queen exclaimed triumphantly.

Alice said, as gravely as she could, `They might go different ways.' But she couldn't help thinking to herself, `What dreadful nonsense we are talking!'

`She can't do sums a bit!' the Queens said together, with great emphasis."'''

ALSO YOU MUST KNOW ITS TRUE ............ 4 = 5 ..............There is a great deal of Mathematical science of the highest order that allows for 4=5

> no real number that you can assign to the variable X which will make the statement true.

So Anonymous G, have you considered expanding your view to include and you better believe the word Lie when it comes to Math is NOT what many might think.

A Lie group is a group defined as a set of mappings on a differentiable manifold. Killing vectors, Lie algebras used with Homology (the boundary of a two-dimensional circular disk is a one-dimensional circle. But a one-dimensional circle has no edges, and hence no boundary.)

Nonny G expand your mind to think about Variable X, where anti-commutation relations derive anti-commuting numbers, so that x times y = –y times x. You need this to move into super symmetry which includes arbitrary space time dimensions. I would be bullshiting you if I said I am totally up to speed with Calabi–Yau manifolds. I am still working on understanding the math for string theory (Do we have 26 spacetime dimensions or only 11? If I truly understood all the math then it has to be more then just 11.

Anon G have you allowed for one of those dimensions, allowing 4=5? Does 1+1 always have to equal 2? You damn well know examples where it fails and yet still works for everyone and YES I do mean pure Math.

You'd just reduce the equation then, right?

Syntax replied with this 14 years ago, 5 minutes later, 12 hours after the original post[^] [v] #374,337

@previous (Postmortem !!Qe8ScDbX+)
First, combine like terms - then solve.

So yes sorta reduction but the more better math language would be combine like terms first to solve the equation.

Anonymous G replied with this 14 years ago, 2 hours later, 14 hours after the original post[^] [v] #374,363

@374,334 (Syntax)
I'm a mathematician. 4 is not equal to 5 in the problem that you presented. Depending on the system we're working under, you *can* have things like 5 is equivalent to 15 (mod 10) but that is NOT the kind of problem you proposed. You gave an algebra problem. If the problem was rooted in group theory, you needed to present that information.

@374,335 (Postmortem !!Qe8ScDbX+)
Reduce it, and see what you get.

Wot set of rules say I need too? I R engineer who uses math daily. Science is not about being boxed in. If you treat Math locked into borders? Good thing Fuzzy logic and you have never met.

Hey I R only trying my best to understand the math behind parallel universe n the string theory behind such, NOT an easy task.

@previous (G)

Proving to you that 2+2=5 is not so easy a task. Just how many times have you tossed away many many unusable answers to non linear equations? Sorting out that one or two or three useful terms.

It occurred to me that in one of the alternate parallel universe, many of the non useful solutions might just be useful elsewhere All the 2nd and 3rd order effects I deal with daily - a 2nd order might become a 1st order if you see where I am headed.

It can be simplified to 3x = 3x + 1, which is obviously false, no matter how much 10 mile satellite bullshit you spew, so stfu. 0 /= 1. x = infinity could be a solution, but not in calculus.

Syntax replied with this 14 years ago, 24 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #374,447

@previous (K)

4x-8 = 2(2x-3)
a: 4x - 8 = 4x - 6
b: 4x - 8 - 4x +8 = 4x - 6 - 4x + 8
c: add like terms and reduce so 0 = 2

So the previous example had 4 = 5 and here is an example of 0 = 2

You just do not care for a solution that in most but not all cases needs to be discarded. And again I bet you have not once used Fuzzy logic to solve anything.

> I bet you have not once used false logic to solve anything.

Fixed that for you, and you would correct in that assumption. I do not use "fuzzy" (read "false") logic to solve anything. Though I may be guilty of logical fallacies, they're not real solutions, and neither are yours. Now kindly shit the fuck up.
