A man had several bags that contained baggies. Each bag of baggies contained about 8 large rocks.
He pulled one out and gave it to the woman next to him.
I told the driver and he called it in. They got wise to it and I followed them when they got off. He confronted me, but I was already planning to go to the nearby Walgreens, so that was an easy out.
I called 911 and gave the location and description. They got back on to the next bus, and I called 911 again with the bus ID number.
A transit police car came zooming up the street two minutes later. They're fucked :D

Oh, sure, it won’t do a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, but the crack dealers are being pressured out of the adjacent neighborhood (Chinatown) and they’ve spilled out into mine.
They’ll continue, no doubt, but it’ll clearly be the most blatant and stupid dealers—like this one—who get caught.

It has, as has alcohol, and tobacco. But "social ills" don't trump the individuals right to do what they see fit with their body. What right do you have to tell others what they can and cannot do with their own bodies and money? Did the crack on the bus harm you? Crack cocaine has never been legal in this country, yet people still keep on doing it. Is prohibition and locking up crack cocaine users effective at curing these social ills?

Not quite. In Portugal, all drugs were decriminalized (yes, even crack cocaine, meth, and heroin), and their society isn't exactly collapsing. How many people would do drugs they know to be bad if they were legal? I would imagine most people would decline "hard" drugs even if they were legal. The hardcore users would keep on going, but the laws never stopped them anyway.

What I'm saying is if a drug you take has the effect of getting people near you high on it, then it tends to make it illegal. Sure some illegal drugs aren't smoked, but what if everyone who took painkillers had to smoke it and get everyone near them loopy, and then the smoke residue lingers like asbestos so months later you breathe that smoke reside in and it gets them loopy again?

Almost sounds like what happened to my brother. He was invited by the "cool kids" to hang out at some kids house whose liberal parents had left for the weekend.
My brother, always a moral and thoughtful individual, wanted to attend because it was one of those massive house parties that he'd never been to.
Well, as was later recalled by some of his friends at the party, he was pressured into smoking marijuana. He ended up smoking the entire pack of marijuana cigarettes.
Not long after he went into convulsions and started foaming at the mouth. The people at the party held back calling 9/11 for almost 10 minutes.
When the paramedics finally arrived they could do nothing to save him.
The autopsy revealed he had 3 times the lethal dosage of THC in his blood.
But I'm sure everyone here will deny my story and the fact that my brother died after smoking that illegal narcotic.
Leonidas !nBpim1wazU replied with this 15 years ago, 1 minute later, 1 hour after the original post[^][v]#44,524

I doubt it. The people who want drugs will (and do) obtain them, regardless of what the law says. The people who don't, wont. OP is probably masturbating furiously to an episode of COPS right now (a sort of reality TV show where a camera crew follows police around as they do police stuff like arrest people) and contemplating what he can do to get more crack users locked up.

There is a middle ground of people who don't go out of their way to get into drugs, but fall into them, which full legalisation would make easier to do. For example, they might be offered smne by a friend and this would be far more common and easier to do in an all-legalised country.

I seriously doubt they would. There seem to be people who enjoy drugs and people who don't. Hard drugs have limited appeal because people know they are bad. Everyone has the right as a human to do what they wish to their bodies. As long as they don't interfere with the lives of others, smoking crack (or any other substance) should be allowed for anyone who desires it.

My two cents: 1) marinol is a pill and is not convenient to sufferers who smoke pot because a) people who are afflicted by serious illnesses such as AIDS are prone to vomitting so oral ingestion is practically worthless b) you need a large dosage of marinol pills to induce the same kind of effects that smoking pot offers. synthetic thcs not a toy bud. 2) Does being a caregiver give you license to smoke it yourself for recreation? If the answer is no, and it's not for any sort of health benefit, then you're just backhandedly exploiting laws given to you. I think hypocrisy is ugly in America but it's not any sort of convenient way to say 'well it's legal now so that doesn't make it bad.' If you retroactively applied that to any other sort of narcotic, anyone who's lived before 1920 could probably make the same strawman argument about other narcotics. Just because the law dictates they're bad or not bad, and how they are regulated, doesn't change the fact that people who do them isn't cause for concern.

I don't really give a shit whether people do crack or not. They shouldn't blatantly deal on a bus. That speaks to a lack of respect for anyone around them, and it degrades a sense of community or safety. If we're tossing around socio/psychological babble here, it's a violation of the social contract at a really basic level.
I probably would have ignored it out of fear. I have no problem with AC doing otherwise, though, and actually find it rather commendable that he did something about it.
Can someone please tell me what's so great about crack deals on public transportation? Leave the Ron Paul bullshit about people's rights to their bodies out of it -- that's tangential. This is a crack deal in public. That has consequences to the community.

It degrades a community's sense of safety, security, adherence to basic norms -- the really important intangibles that make people happy to live where they do. Every time behavior like this is seen and allowed, it encourages others to do the same. More crime. Loss of home value. Etc. etc. I am actually really shocked that anyone would defend someone's "right" to deal drugs in public.
IMO, much less harm is done if they deal drugs in a more private setting. It shows a blatant lack of respect to do that on public transportation, where others are forced to sit near you.

Only the people who actually want to participate in the transaction have to do so. Rather than multiple bystanders being brought into a transaction which they disagree with, but keep silent about out of fear.
This is actually one of the main differences between a community that people want to live in, versus one they flee from (for lack of a better term, "ghettos"). In a healthy community with a high level of buy-in to the basic social contract (about how people interact with one another), there is a great deal of trust in how others will behave; you go to work to get money, pay for the things you need, use influence rather than violence to persuade others to behave in a way that's agreeable to you.
In a community where that contract is regularly flouted, and others have to witness depraved acts on a regular basis, there is little trust in how others will behave. That instability has a high cost to people. People simply can't live like that and stay psychologically healthy. There is a REASON people don't want to go live in ghettos where others are expected to witness crime & go along with it -- and it's not just that we're brainwashed prudes who want to control others.
I'm actually quite surprised that Eels, with his background in social psychology, doesn't recognize what crack deals in public actually do to a community.

The answer is not, though, to simply decriminalize and ignore it all. Or would you honestly suggest society has no interest in legislating any behaviors at all?
You seem to be attempting to use some of these concepts to delegitimize the real harm that is associated with the illegal drug trade today. Regardless of where the harm comes from, I can assure you there's a cost to people dealing crack in public. Or would you say otherwise?

There is nothing wrong with reporting a crack deal like this.
If I saw someone dealing crack on my train or on my way to work, I might report it. It creates a dangerous situation. I should not be subjected to it.
I see nothing wrong with this. If people are doing something like a drug deal in public and it makes you uncomfortable, you have every right to report it to police.
Drug deals, especially involving things like crack, can quickly become dangerous.
I don't agree that possession should be a crime. It helps no one. Not even society. I have mixed feelings about selling. I'm not saying I think it should be legal, but addicts selling to support their habit are still victims in need of help. It's always better to save someone than to lock then up.
That said, you shouldn't ever have to feel threatened or uncomfortable from these things. It wasn't some innocent mistake. It was blatant and I'm sure many others noticed and felt scared or uncomfortable.
It wasn't some guy smoking a blunt on the corner. It was a fucking obvious crack deal in public.
