If OP wants to see people who are dealing with their own mortality, then maybe volunteering to help the terminally ill or elderly might be interesting. AA/NA, in my experience, is mostly a self-indulgent bawww-fest for people who want to replace their drug or alcohol problem with a lot of angsty, melodramatic bitching about how hard it is living with their problem. The goal seems not to be problem solving. Rather, it seems to be replacing an obsession with drugs and alcohol with an obsession to tell everyone your long-winded story about how hard it is to be you.
If you're in to that sort of thing, I guess... have a ball. But it gets old real fast.

Yes, I've been to lots; with friends, for myself, under a court order, and later supervising crazy teenagers who where ordered to be there by the court. I've sat through plenty. The only people who really seem to get much out of it are the people who center their life around "spreading the word" about their unfortunate circumstances. I suppose coming to terms with having a problem is an important step, but a lot of the 12-step programs seem to be focused on obsessing over it for the rest of your life rather than dealing with it and moving on.
I suppose I should qualify all this with the caveat that it is just what I have noticed. Every meeting and group is different. These are just my observations of what seems to be the one constant across many different meetings that I have been to over the years.

On the upside, AA usually has free coffee, so I guess that's a plus.

AA's structure and foundation are reasonable, the people in it are not. AA and Alanon (connected support group for family of drug users) were an unfortunately large part of my childhood...I can say without out a doubt OP is better talking about Fight Club with /b/ than go to meetings lolol. AA turns asshole alcoholics into annoying dependent egotists.*

You know, in Fight Club the Fight Club is started when Tyler and Narrator are fighting and other people join in. Then it's revealed that Tyler don't real and therefore it must have been Narrator fighting the air. Why did the other people go near that crazy psychopath who is fighting himself?
