IMO/IME, it's good if you want to learn some words and phrases, maybe for a foreign trip or holiday. If you really want to learn a language well, understanding sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, etc., is essential, and Rosetta Stone is very poor at teaching you these things. They talk about how "memorising and reciting rules" isn't how you'd "naturally" learn a language, but if you want to learn any language efficiently the "immersive" technique Rosetta Stone employs sucks dick.
A fiend who had bought Rosetta Stone couldn't stop praising it and talking about how easy it made learning German for her, but when I actually asked her to say something she was using all the wrong grammatical genders, putting filler words where they shouldn't go, and making loads of other mistakes. She seemed to learn more just buying a GCSE German book.

I heard that another way of learning a language is through an exchange trade where you teach English and they teach you the language you seek. How does this work necessarily if such a thing is possible?

I made quite the opposite experience with Swedish. Truth is, I don't know the rules how and why something is as is, and couldn't let's say... "write a formula" that would explain how for example questions are asked in Swedish. But I do know how to ask them, and I started learning Swedish with Rosetta Stone.
Swedes were surprised how I don't miss "ett" and "en" or how I don't make other beginner mistakes.
Truth is, once I felt comfortable with Swedish I started watching Solsidan (Swedish series) with Swedish subtitles, and I watched scene by scene, repeated after the actors etc. And I did my best to keep it all Swedish, not translating into another language I know.
But then again, my success might have come from the fact that I speak Slovenian, German and English fluent, and Swedish is basically German + English with some twists.
That's my experience with Rosetta Stone.

So basically Rosetta Stone is a good tool in helping you learn a language, but one shouldn't expect to become a fluent speaker because of it?

Just dont make it your only source for learning and dont expect learning it by just having rosetta stone installed, you actually have to go through the excersises.
