Topic: Please forgive me, but I’m going to recommend you all try sobriety…

Do you feel irritable and depressive after a night of drinking? Even after just a drink? (Or your substance of choice.) Try going entirely sober for six weeks and report back. I’ve been avoiding substances for about a year, now, and I’m feeling quite good about it.
At first, I missed the habit of enjoying the complex, earthy flavors of nice booze with meals, but I’ve taken the money I would have spent and using it for nicer coffee and pastries, instead. When I’m feeling anxious, I go on walks or perform mindful exercises that are a bit like meditation.
Previously, I found myself feeling shitty and anxious about life, and dulled those feelings with booze and pot. What really happened, though, was I ended up less capable of dealing with how I felt. Now, I’m realizing that substances have largely been a net negative in my life.
Some of you might have the genes and coping mechanisms that allow you to use substances and not feel shitty from it, but I’ll still issue you a challenge to give sobriety a try.

Is it the substances themselves that caused you problems though, or merely the fact you used drink and weed to forget about problems in your life, instead of dealing with them elsehow?

That’s a decent point. It was a little of both. Alcohol makes me feel really shitty the next day. My brain is in a fog even after one drink. Weed really decreases my motivation. I’ve been feeling shitty about life in general, but addressing those problems didn’t really seem very effective without more mental clarity.
