Democrats and Republicans sign a bill saying "If we don't sort our deficit and debt shit out, we're just going to automatically gut spending and raise taxes."
The reasoning was, those automatic cuts would be so deep and so arbitrary, that both sides would eventually be willing to compromise, because the results of not compromising would be unacceptable to both parties. Those cuts automatically start at the beginning of next year, so they have until the end of the year to pass a budget through both houses that reduces the debt and deficit.

It's a set of tax increases and immediate spending cuts that automatically go into effect Jan 1st 2013 if congress and the white house don't agree on a budget.

First of all, I think it's interesting that for some reason, people consider it the executive branch's responsibility to write legislation. Why is the executor of the laws also supposed to write them? Isn't that why we have a legislative branch?
That aside, I think that Republican obstruction will end, but Obama's budget won't get passed unless it's heavily watered down. I am curious to see just how long the Republicans will refuse to budge on the "raising taxes" issue, since if they oppose it for too long, taxes will go up automatically anyway.

It will be a ghost of Obama's budget, it will be something no one is happy with and something that accomplishes jack shit. Imagine trying to sit down with MM and write up a rational budget. That's pretty much the position Obama is in.

It's political posturing mostly, Republicans are seen as 'standing up to da man' by their base. But if you look at what Republicans have done while in office it becomes plainly obvious they are as bad or worse than Democrats with budgets. The Republican way is to fight everything until they get control, then do stuff. It's the only way they're still (sadly) relevant.
