I got sick of seeing everyone's status updates, and bullshit, and people kind of expect you to read them. I've had people announce big losses over FB, and I neglected to read the status, and said something hurtful. (For example: "Oh hey, how's your son?", when the son died 2 days ago, although not specifically that.) If I don't have a Facebook, I'm not expected to do any of that, read anyone's status, keep up with anyone's opinions/life events. If you're important enough to me that I want to talk to you outside where we happenstance happen to be near each other, then you have my phone number.
