Do you think that children should just be pushed along to the next grade when it is obvious they do not get/understand/want to do the work from the previous grade? I think this is setting them up for failure. I have seen in several of the states that I have lived in, this is something of the norm.
Also,
Do you think that children who refuse to do their work should be coddled and just let them be? Or do you think that they should be pushed to do it? When the teachers stop caring, what happens then?

I think failing children should be forced to take remedial courses and a workload should be plotted out for them which enables graduation by 18.
ie:
Kid fails English I
Has to retake English I over the summer, or in addition to English II over next semester. This is not a perfect system, as not all courses are like the humanities, but rather build on each other. For math or science courses, either mandatory summer school or an accelerated course system which combines 2 courses over one semester (1 hr a day Math I failed = 2 hrs a day Math I, then 2 hrs a day Math II) would be the most effective.
ie:

Also I thought the point of the grade system is that it is 'graded' in difficulty, rather than an age-based year system.

I'm not so sure this is "obsolete" now, as I am sure some people are still in this situation. I defined agree with your point as a whole, though. Dropping out so you can sit around and leech is bullshit. I think dropping out should be an option, but it should be very very very hard to get approval to do so.

I'm not so sure this is "obsolete" now, as I am sure some people are still in this situation. I defined agree with your point as a whole, though. As someone involved in education, I am actually in favor of social promotion after the student has repeated the level once. After that, there is little hope that they will ever master it. Statistics show this.

It's more laziness or a lack of motivation, and the achievement gap between countries or even different social classes backs this. Both of those are easier remedied quickly rather than later or never.
For a student to advance, he or she must know the material. If that means 12 hours a day are taken up by mandatory remedial courses and tutoring/studying sessions, they'll have a good deal of motivation to fix their situation. It sucks to be them now, true, but then it sucks more for me to finance their "stressful" days of unemployment later.

I have years of experience in the field. I used to believe as you do. However, I have seen again and again students that will just never, ever make it, unless they are socially promoted. They deserve at least a fighting chance at life, i.e. a degree. Without a degree, they will just be another welfare recipient whom the conservatives complain about.

They'll either blame it on some sort of mental health issue and push drugs on the kid, or blame it on the parents or home environment. But damned if they won't say they tried, whether they did it the right way or not.

No, let them fail. I heard once a high school diploma meant something, now it's junk. I also heard a bachelor's degree from college meant something. Now it's junk too and a master's degree or PhD is needed. Maybe if lazy people could drop out of school, then the job market would be better for everyone else.
For instance, Depressionman has nearly a PhD and yet has to work at low wage crappy jobs. A lot of people are like that too. If they stupid kids and lazy kids could drop out of school, then maybe the ones either smarter or more hard working would have an easier time getting jobs.
The way it is now, the alpha males are all cool in school. They get pushed through despite being lazy and failing. They go on to have good jobs after school. Used to be in the 70s, these people would pump gas. No more, now the dumb alphas are rich and successful and step on the nerds just like in high school.
