yes. absolutely. if a weapon is legal, you should own it. i would get one but i've already got a compound bow. it needs to be restrung, i haven't used it years. got it when i was a kid.

i went into a gun store with a friend once and we kept looking at all these guns and i kept saying, awesome, but i can't own that.
and they guy who worked there heard me and he said, "why not?"
and i pointed to a .50 rifle all decked out with a tripod and big ass scope and all and i said, "oh, well i mean like that one, or the automatic ones over there."
and he said, "nope, you can own that. you can own anything in this store, and you can take it home today."
and i said, "really?"
and he said, "yup. if you can see it, you can buy it."
and i could see like tommy guns, and all sorts of guns i thought you had to be police to own.

only newer guns. guns that predate the ban are totally legal. so like old AKs and stuff are totally cool.

but see that's for just most folks. really anybody can own any kind of gun they want, you just have to be licensed to own it. if you're a collector, or a reseller, then you can pretty much have anything at all ever made. if you pay the tax on it, and have all your paperwork. That's how most regular folks get their silenced mp5s or big ass machine guns. there's a lot of red take to own those legally.
but that doesn't have anything to do with illegal guns. if a criminal want a gun they can get whatever they want too, it'll just be a little harder to get and cost a whole lot more.
so really it only prevents some people from getting them because it's either difficult, or expensive.
but you can still get them.

Find me a preban AK. Do it and stop talking out your ass. And then take real pictures of Bigfoot.
Protip: squeegee is making it pretty obvious his knowledge of guns is exceeded only by Matt's knowledge of honesty.

I nevwr claimed to be an expert. As i've said i only own a few guns.
I did a google search on "preban AK" and found several chinese made ak47 automatic rifles that sell in the US. They are about 1500 bucks or so, and you can find them at gun shows.
Why do i have to do your googling for you? Just look it up.
And if i'm wrong, sorry. I'm no expert. That being said there are plenty of tommy guns you can buy as well as other old automatics.
But if you know more about guns and gun bans then me then you prove the date of the ban, include which guns are banned, and then prove that no Ak47s were ever manufactured and shipped to the US prior to that ban.
And when i get home i'll do a slightly more through search and look for a preban AK47 and post links where it may be obtained. We'll get to the bottom of this whole ak47 thing.
But, what's not in dispute is that there are fully automatic guns that aren't banned. That's just common knowledge.

AK47 was designed in 1947. Ban went into effect in the early 1920s. When you see preban AK47 that refers to a preban magazine which is meaningless since the.ban expired. It is also not an AK, but an SK, (automatic vs. Semiautomatic) but advertisers are idiots.
There are a very small number of automatic weapons you can own. Most tommy guns are illegal for civilian ownership. If it is old enough you can get your tax stamp. Otherwise you need government permission which is all but impossible for an individual to get, or deal firearms to cops and military, or be a licensed gun range with the right licenses.

alright, i've spent about 10 minutes googling around about it and have come up with a thread that supports everything that i have said. I see no reason to take my investigations any further than this.
here are the highlights:
> Any full auto rifle reqiures a Form 4 with a tax stamp. Pre Ban in the NFA world means pre-1984. Since then you must be police or military to own a newly manufactured full auto rifle. If you are not, then you can still buy a "preban" but it will be very expensive. The AK would be legal for you to own..with the approved Form 4...
> Yes you can get a full auto. No you don't need a class 3 FFL. You do need a federal excise stamp as HotGuns stated. Two ways to go as "I" understand it from the few Class 3's I have talked to. 1. You can buy a rifle mfg. pre 1984 as full auto...bring lots of green backs.
> You do not need an FFL to get this stuff, you just have to fill out and complete a Form 4, get it approved and then you can have your fun.
> So, yes, you can go out and get a full auto if you can afford it. That full auto has to have been built before 1984, which is when Congress got stupid and passed another ban that did nothing to combat crime, instead it just combats ownership by making machine guns much more expensive to own since there are a limitied number of them and its all about supply (which isnt much) but demand( which is alot). When the demand is greater than the supply, you can pretty much name your price.
