It's about a group of teenage girls from a small US town, most attending the same High School, that developed Tourettes-like symptoms. I hadn't heard about it until I watched it last week, don't remember hearing about it in UK news. Interesting programme even if you know about the case tho.

Seen it.
Fascinating stuff, though. I want to agree that it was brought on by stress, but it's behaving a lot like an infection of some kind. Surely not all of them were undergoing stressful life events?
Also, it's chilling how at tue end the guy says that three more girls have gotten it since. Makes you wonder how far this thing'll go.

People take on suffering all the time, voluntarily. There are secondary gains to being "sick."

Did you watch it? It's quite obvious that there's a genuine problem.
The fact that family members back up their claims is quite compelling proof. If they suspected that their beloved daughters were faking and not actually suffering then they'd tell them to knock it off.

But if it was an infection, would you really expect the group who underwent psychological treatment to improve as well as they did? It's not impossible to experience physical suffering with a root psychological cause. There are all sorts of examples of this, like somatoform pain. Or phantom pain, where people get pain in limbs that have been removed (or never even existed). When I saw the first girl who started producing the tics it did go through my mind that it might be Munchausen though.

I do pretty much believe that it's psychological in nature, it's just odd how much it seems like an infection.
