I doubt Joseph Smith was Mormon at the get go. Anyway, once you get the project off the ground you can hand it off to others to go forth & multiply.

I guess the main problem is its membership would be limited to ~10% of the population. It could be a successful troll but I can't see it becoming a "respected" religion.
