I'm debating getting the new Nexus 7 with 4g when it comes out, and going back to a separate dumb phone with lifeline service for calls. Now I know I would have to carry 2 devices, but I just love the larger screen for internet, GPS, and basically all the things you use a smartphone for.
Plus T-mobile has a righteous $30 a month plan that gives you 5gb of 4g down but only 100 voice minutes. No tethering allowed though, but you can still make VOIP calls over the 4g with the right apps. So I could have the nexus 7 plus a straight talk phone for less money per month than I currently pay for my smartphone.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of rolling like this? Will two devices be a drag, or will it be fucking awesome?

Yes they do but it can be tricky to get that plan. Its there they have it - Miss-leading in my opinion re activation on web because in theory you can buttttttttt
So check with people you know and ask if they have that plan. YOU can get it but you may have to work hard to get it. I cannot say more on this because I bill T-Mobile and what I can say is very limited.
I can say T-Mobile is a good company and soon will be a great deal more better. Transfer of ownership with money pouring in. The so called ads re fastest 4G is so missssleading. But AT&T says the same BS in Ads. I can say that because I keep telling T-Mobile that

I had two phones for a while (for work) and hated it.
Just get the Nexus 7 and flash it to use a carrier like Boost and pay $50 for unlimited everything.

I'd get the phone. You can always carry them in your purse. The only disadvantage I see is sifting through all the bullshit in your purse (tampons, makeup, tissues, peppermints, etc,) and finding the right phone you need.

No, I don't mean to connect an sd card reader to it.
It'd work, yes, but I'd rather just use a regular flash stick that anyone has lying around.

I already rock custom roms so I just go into into settings and enable it.
They can't do anything about it and I'm using my data how I wish.
There are apps that do it on stock devices, but I don't keep up with those since I don't need them.
