Unions were vital when work conditions for the working class were absolutely dismal and major reform was needed, but now it seems like people only join unions because they want more wages for less work instead of getting off their asses and working more for it. In this day and age you can make six figures as an electrician or a plumber, if you don't have any skills then fuck off until you do. You're only as worthless as you want to be.

RE: Public sector - I have relative in the public sector who regularly work from 8am-11pm - pretty sure that level of work demands the reassurance of fair pay and conditions.
Also don't forget that the presence of unions alone prevents businesses from acting irresponsibly in the first place. They're not just there as a reactive measure.

Private unions and collective bargaining are OK. It's good for workers to team up instead of being bullied by their employers as individuals. Joint law-suits are a good example. Public unions where the government gets behind the union is complete bullshit in my opinion, because then the government can essentially coerce the company into giving into all of the demands of the workers, which can cause actions that are not fair for the company, the company's consumers and stockholders, and sometimes also not even good for the employees or the economy in the long run. Essentially, when a union gets backing from the government, it's no longer a union and basically becomes a labor cartel instead. It's no different from the mafia or other organized criminals getting behind a union. I also don't like how politicians can just give union workers whatever they want to gain their votes at the expense of the tax payer and anyone else who loses out on the deal.
Also, even private unions can turn bad, if their is too much bureaucracy. When it gets to the point when the union is no longer even run by the employees, and becomes just some company that wants a part of your paycheck, then at that point you're better off without a union. I've been there, and it's like you have to fight both companies to get your rights. There's even colluding between the union company and the company you work for, so they basically get in bed together and work out how to fuck over the employee as much as possible.
