Approximately 84% of private vehicles in the UK have a manual rather than automatic transmission. There are no statistics available for the USA, but I can only assume that the vast vast majority of cars there are automatic. Why is that?
Being in an automatic car isn't driving, it's just steering. With MPG and performance shittier on automatic cars, one does wonder, why are automatics so popular in the USA? Is it simply because Americans are more lazy?

The main reason, I think, is that gasoline costs half as much in the US as it does in the UK so the efficiency argument doesn't matter much. The second reason is that most people, in either the UK or the US just want a transportation appliance to get from A to B. Automatics are better because you don't have to think about gear shifts or hill starts or the clutch or any of that. In city traffic a manual transmission is more a liability than anything. Automatics are better 99% of the time.

We do real driving here, not recreational driving. When you spend, on average, 45 minutes in traffic to and from work you'll want an automatic too.

by the by I agree with you HowSomEver albeit I drive a Stick Shift my GF's car is Automatic and when we drive North up to San Francisco, we use her car cause Stick shifts just do not cut it, including advanced Sticks that are not as difficult as in past re Mother Fucking San Francisco Hills.

I have traveled for business n pleasure in your country. Never driven there. Taxi's mostly. Big cities of USA are freeway's which often are a real pain with Manual transmission. So many start stops for 45 mins drive. I did that daily in Los Angeles, and kept wondering why I continued to buy stick shifts. With the Porsche that was the only option - Alfa Romeo and previous Fiat Spyder 124, the same.
Here in San Diego with even fewer freeway options, I continued with a stick (BMW's) So I have years n years of practice but its still a pain when I am jammed up on a freeway. These days as a full time consultant, its not a problem because I plan meetings based on avoiding freeway peak jam times.

So? britain is small, so it's tightly packed, great for walking (since it was designed in walking days,) and you've got great public transportation. like y'all even need to shift out of third to get where you're going. it's a breeze. Plus your roundabouts are really fucking efficient, you don't even need to downshift.

no, i mean that our 8-12 lane highways are usually gridlocked for 45 minutes to an hour in either direction multiple times per day. That means you sit and wait, then go for a second, stop, wait, go for a bit, stop real hard because texting, wait for awhile, accelerate to 20 miles per-hour for 23 seconds, stop, wait, go, stop, wait, go, wait, start going, stop, wait for a while, get past the first jam, drive 45mph for less than 1 mile, slow down, sloe down, cruis, slow down, stop... back to waiting. This goes on for almost an hour.
you can't tell me simply easing up on the brake a little as you scooch along is harder than constantly pumping your clutch for an hour.
for real, after about 30 minutes you're looking to exit the highway and take surface streets and deal with lights. at least it feels like you're making progress. granted, because i used to drive a manual transmission vehicle i do know quite a number of back ways to get places.
but now that i've got an automatic i take the highway. i just lean back, sip my coffee and i tap my foot-just singing along-with cyndi lauper or some other gay ass shit becuase i'm happy as fuck i don't have to use my parking break to keep from rolling back into people trying to go uphill. You probably read stickbuns post, trying to do that shit makes people lose it! i don't know what you'd want to subject yourself to that just because manual transmission is hip.

my real opinion is that for the vast majority of drivers you want to make cars safe, and easy to operate. honestly, they'll give anyone a license here. we don't just execute retards and insane people, we let them drive too.
let's make it nice and simple for everyone.
and it's great that people like the option of manual transmission, it adds a layer of depth, and complexity. simply put, it's not for everyone. did you see that video of the girl that drives with her feet because she has no arms? we let her have a license. anyone can drive, but not everyone should be shifting gears.
my real opinion is that for the vast majority of drivers you want to make cars safe, and easy to operate. honestly, they'll give anyone a license here. we don't just execute retards and insane people, we let them drive too.
let's make it nice and simple for everyone.
and it's great that people like the option of manual transmission, it adds a layer of depth, and complexity. simply put, it's not for everyone. did you see that video of the girl that drives with her feet because she has no arms? we let her have a license. anyone can drive, but not everyone should be shifting gears.

The roads which are only just wide enough for 2 cars (sometimes not even that), you would need to be suicidal to walk on them as a 60mph speed limit applies to these roads.

Because for the vast majority of people in the UK (and other countries) this stuff is not even an issue that outweighs the other benefits of manual transmission.

i know, right? manual is fucking base model, unless you're driving a high dollar sports car or an off-road vehicle then you just look like some poor fag who can't afford simple upgrades to their car. do you also go with the base model radio "because the sterio upgrade only comes with mid-quality speakers and no sub woofer, and i'll eventually upgrade it to an aftermarket sterio system with pre-amps and everything. it's also a manual transmission because it's better and had no disadvantages whatsoever."
