Topic: Did you know there's such a thing as a poop transplant?

Anonymous A started this discussion 14 years ago #22,926

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fecal_bacteriotherapy

Fecal (faecal) microbiota transplantation (FMT) also known as a poop or stool transplant[1] is the process of transplantation of fecal bacteria from a healthy individual into a recipient[2][3] as a treatment for patients suffering from Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), which produces effects ranging from diarrhea to pseudomembranous colitis. Previous terms for the procedure include fecal bacteriotherapy, fecal transfusion, fecal transplant, stool transplant, fecal enema and human probiotic infusion (HPI). FMT involves restoration of the colonic flora by introducing healthy bacterial flora through infusion of stool, e.g. by enema, obtained from a healthy human donor. It can also be used to treat other conditions, including colitis,[4] constipation,[4] irritable bowel syndrome,[4] and some neurological conditions.
