Topic: Is it worth buying a GoPro so I can record myself jet-skiing, diving and then sell it?

Anonymous A started this discussion 14 years ago #22,861

I have a 1030SW but it doesn't have a head or a chest mount like the GoPro so I can't fucking use it. Is it worth buying a GoPro for a few days use then just putting it back on eBay? Will I lose money?

@OP
Perhaps you can download one.

It depends how much you want to record yourself jet-skiing, diving etc. If you really want it then sure. If it's just something that sounds cool then it's not really "worth it" but it might be fun.

> Will I lose money?

Maybe not, but the chances of a used camera selling on ebay for the same price as an unused one in a shop is pretty slim tbh. So yeah you'll probably lose a bit of money. Maybe you could sell that first camera you mentioned and keep the gopro in case you want to record yourself doing things again in the future. Like skydiving or urbex or something.

Why not just buy mounts for your cam?
Also, the GoPro has a super wide angle (a.k.a. fish eye) and it's useless for anything beside such action POV shots or really "close up" filming.

Also, filming anything else without a display is a pain in the butt.

Buy a used one on ebay cheap, have fun, sell it. you wont loose that much money.

I would just buy one used on eBay or whatever cheap as possible then resell it with the accessories. It's just a shame considering I already have a waterproof shockproof camera impossible to mount it hands free. Just weighing up the money I will lose vs the video I would capture, I'm not gonna be doing this stuff again for some time. Also I would probably buy a suction mount and stick it on my car. They look badass mounted to cars.

@previous (TheSheep !kJ.A4PF7.k)
They don't sell mounts and it's quite a big heavy thing to have strapped on anyway. GoPros are used for thousands of things such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuDN2bCIyus so I don't know that what you say is true.

You do realize, half of the clips in that video were taken with real cameras, wit long lenses? Not a super wide?

EDIT: It's not that hard to tell which ones were taken by the GoPro lol

Yeah, you can tell which bits are filmed with GoPros and it looks good enough for me.

Even some you think are filmed by the GoPro ain't ;)
Let me show you... see this screen shot? This wasn't taken with a GoPro... and notice the cam on the left? A real camera with a fish eye... so not even the cockpit shots are taken with a GoPro...

I don't wanna say it's a terrible cam, far from that, but it's really not suitable for a lot of stuff beside mount on your head and goof around.
I'd post some footage I got from the skatepark, but I don't have it here... doing a 720 with it on the helmet... it's all blurry and retarded and not really usable in a video (you don't know shit what's going on in the clip, you just see blurry stuff flying around).

And the colors, you'll never get the colors you see in the promo videos. It's quite dull, needs a lot of editing/color correction to get it as vivid as the promo videos. Sure is filming in 720p, but from such a tiny sensor you can't expect sharp and crisp video like you'd expect from a real cam with a 35mm sensor.

Long story short, it's a cool cam for specific gimmicky shots, but nothing more.

What you say is pretty off putting, but then I watch something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pboS9LGlZxA and it seems alright. Not sure what to think. £145 for Gopro, £30 for chest mount and another £30 for suction mount. It's pretty overpriced, the majority of that is likely profit.

If you're happy with what you've linked, and wanna film such stuff. Go for it. That's as good as you'll get with the go pro, and if that makes you happy. Do it. Even tho it's overpriced as fuck.

I will try to find something cheaper. I need to have it chest or head mountable so I can record myself cycling through traffic in Asia and different things. Olympus are retards for not selling chest mounts.

No point filming anything if the quality is (very) shit.

For a basically free cam, it's really well.

I know, I've owned one before. Couldn't decipher the poorly translated from Mandarin instructions and ended up selling it. I need something chest mountable though.
