Political Third Parties in America would actually fare much better as non-profit organizations like PETA or Greenpeace.
As third parties they kinda don't do shit. they spend all their money on silly little campaigns that add little value to the discussion. If they spent their money on informing the public about the issues their organization hold dear they'd likely have more influence.

Its very rare that anyone becomes President without winning the popular vote. I am about to go back out for two more hours of 10 Mile Surfing or I would look up some good stuff re the Popular vs E-College thing for you. But basic is - Monster states like New York and Calif could in theory take total command of all USA and make the small states insignificant. So the E-College thing was designed to balance things out IF and only IF the popular vote is very very close. So we did end up with a Bush who lost in Popular vote but some hanging chads (think old IBM Punch cards) gave Florida the power to put Bush into office which of course was great if you were a Munitions manufacture re Iraq war.
Crappy IBM style punch cards are/were responsible for start of 16 Trillion dollar mess USA is in. Good i can type at 90WPM n make no 10 mile sense eh. But honestly if you followed any of this - Its really accurate +/- 3.2%
