If you allow Google to track you? You can turn that feature off. Buttttt if its ON - Then Google knows what you look for. Algorithm.
My cell phone lets me know I am seconds away from a Starbucks. Even if I just left another one a couple blocks away lol

What do you mean it knows what I look for? What I search for? What I say in emails or what emails I read the most?

@previous (A)
Yes what you search for.
If we both allow Google to track us, and I do a search on Google for US Politics - What I see on the first page of results will differ from yours. The results are personalized.
You could turn off that tracking feature - If you do you win something and of course you lose something.
Google's Algorithm targets the words in your email to what you search for on Google. IF you fear a silicon CPU knowing your tastes in porn? Turn off the tracking feature.
PS
Google allows you to chose tracking on Google Search yet cut off its ability to use that feature on your email account.
Hit Google with search to show you how to control what Google does with YOU

Well, it does a good job of picking out what's important. I'm not particularly concerned. Thanks for the reply.

I do own the stock - er well for the moment Harvard Med School has my G-Stock. When I come up with the cash they gave me for the stock, I can buy it back. Google is better then Gold.

It's likely an algorithm based on the sender and your past pattern of opening emails, and how other people open emails by the same sender. There's probably more factors, but we'll never now for sure.

Basically, Gmail ass rapes you on a daily basis. But it's alright, it lubes the hole up real nice beforehand.
