I can figure out what the other lyrics are referencing like test tube babies and artificial limbs, but not these lyrics.

In 3535 people will have no free will and everything will be chosen for us. The pill could be an actual mind control pill or it could mean it as a metaphor for television perhaps. Not sure about 4545 though. Maybe it means like everyone stays inside and does everything with technology rather than being social and doing things face-to-face, so society breaks down.

Maybe it's because everything that happens in 4545 is disconnected from reality because you only ever see words on a screen rather than other people? Or maybe I just got it all wrong. Who knows.

Maybe it is just a pun because you might say you are "chewing through" a thing to learn with it if it is difficult, and if you really wanted to you could actually chew on a book but you couldn't with digital things. But also because afaik computer outputs back then were just alternating lights and things on large banks so they probably thought that people would be replacing socialisation with sitting in dark rooms in front of a giant metal machine looking at blinking lights in silence, which dehumanises the person you are actually talking to with it and makes the experience feel like you are just on your own talking to a machine.

I am about as old as God herself. Back in married days we took a UCLA film class Evening extension. Class featured Students,Lucas Spielberg and veterans like Coppola.
I was in error re name of the Student version - It is THX-1138:4EB and Wiki says its 15 mins. In class we viewed a version that was about 40 mins. Wiki says its available in a CD set along with the full THX1138 Directors cut, but that is the 15 minute version. Wiki says nada about the main thing I remember re effects. Lucas was granted access to San Francisco's early work on the BART system.
Tight close up shots and draped material and lighting made for a very future looking enviro.

On a very early wireless project I was working on, I ran into Lucas in a mostly finished tunnel when he was scouting it out for another project.
Was one hell of a class because film makers brought in work in progress and all the films turned out to be top reviewed films.
