They asked for a woman. Her name consisted of my girlfriend's first name, and the rest of the family's last name. The guy had a very strange phone manner, and claimed to be an old friend. He later said that he had found the name on the internet, and called every number with the same last name. He kind of sounded like he was lying.

I'd suggest a combination of Google search and reverse phone lookup. You can also search for an overview of criminal backgrounds using this Criminal Searches tool and then using a free state database for the state of conviction (if one exists). All of these are available online free and quick, and hence are standard tools for recruiting agencies.

It could very well be coincidence. He could have been looking for someone, an ex-girlfriend or something, and she just happens to have your last name and your GF's first name.
