A 200-million-year-old “punk-sized†dinosaur is stirring up buzz among scientists after being rediscovered and identified by a paleontologist among a collection of fossils.
A specimen of the mini dinosaur, newly identified as the Pegomastax africanus (or “thick jaw from Africaâ€), was originally found in the 1960s in rocks from southern Africa.
The fossil was kept at Harvard University, where it was discovered by University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno, who published an article on it on Wednesday in the online journal ZooKeys.
The tiny dinosaur, which ate only plants, was less than two feet long with one-inch jaws, according to Sereno, and lighter than a housecat.
Despite the dwarf dinosaur’s diminutive size, it was a speed demon.
